365 Reasons to Smile – Day 346
One of first books I bought for my children was Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.
I remember being fascinated by the story, not the drawings, when I was a child.
The Caldecott winning book is about Sylvester Duncan, a donkey who collects pebbles “of unusual shape and color.” He is holding the pebble when he encounters a lion and wishes he were a rock. When he turns into one, the pebble falls off so he doesn’t have the ability to make another wish.
Despite his parents frantic search, no one can find him as long as he remains a rock.
After a year, circumstances allow Sylvester to reunite with his parents. But the message is clear: wishes aren’t all they are cracked up to be. The most important lesson in life is to appreciate all that we already have.
That lesson always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 341
Even if I didn’t have children attending public schools, I would have known summer vacation has started without even leaving my office.
From my desk, I can look out the window and see our local public library across the street. Since Monday, I have seen mothers parking their mini vans, SUVs and cars then walking hand in hand with their children into the library. Later, they come out with bags and arms full of books.
Having grown up participating in summer reading programs and looking forward to weekly trips to the library, I immediately recognized what was happening.
And it really made me smile.

Growing up, I was surrounded by books. I just didn’t own most of them. My mom regularly took my brother and me to the library, which we always enjoyed. 
But I always treasured the books I actually owned. I even kept a few to pass on to my own children, which I’m fairly confident they also enjoyed. For example, when my daughter was little she loved turning the pages of “Nibble Nibble Mousekin” as much as I had when I was little.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 297
Just as there is no perfect person, there is no perfect job.
That doesn’t mean we don’t love imperfect people or imperfect jobs. We just have to decide whether the good outweighs the bad and what we are willing to tolerate.
The thing I tolerate in my current job (which I love) is having to drive long distances for relatively short meetings. Despite all available technology, the management in our state office, which is almost four hours away, actually want us to meet in person. I completely understand that, and, if I didn’t have to make the drive, I wouldn’t think it was worth a mention.
Two weeks ago, I drove nearly four hours to a two-hour meeting then had to drive the four hours back. Yesterday, I drove to and from the same location for a three-hour meeting.
But here’s the thing: all those hours in a car by myself allow me to listen to books on tape. Well, they used to be called books on tape. Now they are called “digital spoken audio.”
No matter what the term, I can listen to books while I drive. I can be entertained. I can be informed.
And I can smile while the miles fly by.

I can’t complain about my life. I have a great deal to celebrate and even more for which to be thankful. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t faced tough days and difficult times. There have been times when I’ve spent days in tears and weeks worrying whether life will get any better. 
Logically, I knew things would get better. But emotionally, I sometimes felt as though they wouldn’t.
They always did, of course, and I came out of the situations stronger and wiser.
Which is why, when someone posted a quote on Facebook the other day, I completely appreciated it.
It simply made me smile.

I love children’s books. I loved children’s books when I was a child. I loved children’s books when my children were young. And 
now that my children are older, I love giving children’s books to new parents.
Since I haven’t been in the market for new children’s books for about a decade, I rely on the books I loved reading to my children, especially the ones that made us giggle.
Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch was one of those books. If you’ve never read it, the story centers around Stephanie, who likes to be unique. But every time she attempts to change her ponytail, her peers first make fun of her then copy her. By the end of the book, Stephanie remains true to herself and takes control of the situation.
It’s one of those books that encourages children to think for themselves, and that always makes me smile

My daughter left her “notebook” on the desk in our home office the other day, and I picked it up to and flipped through it.
Just to clarify, this was just a notebook and not a diary. Therefore, I did not violate her privacy. The notebook is one that she uses to write down quotes.
Kendall loves quotes. She loves quotes A LOT. So much so that she constantly feels the need to share them with friends and family. When I say constantly, I mean constantly. And because the quotes are constant, I don’t always pay that much attention.
But flipping through her notebook the other day really gave me insight into the person Kendall is becoming. ‘
One of her favorite quotes was highlighted.
“That’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereals based on color rather than taste.” John Green.
Reading that quote makes me smile. Knowing that my daughter is not a superficial person makes me smile even more.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 129
When I was in elementary school, I read the book The Bears’ House by Marilyn Sachs over and over again. I would turn it in on library day only to check it out again a couple of weeks later.
The story about Fran wasn’t inspiring. She was smelly and unpopular and didn’t have much hope or support. Her efforts to escape her family life was depressing. But the book opened my eyes to a world completely different from my own.
I had a parents who did what society expected parents to do. Fran’s father had left, and her mother was mentally ill.
I never doubted my future was bright, and Fran’s only hope was in an imaginary world.
Yet, some part of me understood and cheered for Fran. And some part of me wanted to step in and make her life better.
Decades later, I’m a licensed social worker and, next week, I’m starting a job that will affect families who, like Fran’s, are facing numerous challenges. As a freshman in college, I never would have chosen such a career path. I thought I was destined for much greater things.
But as a third grader, I think I knew what direction my life would eventually take. And I also think I knew that path would be all about doing great things.
That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 109
People always tell me I have a good memory, and generally, I do. But I don’t have a perfect memory, which is why I can’t remember who gave my son the book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss.
But I clearly remember how much he loved the book. And I still have the text memorized.
But then, I should. I read it over and over and over again. My son never cared much about Good Night, Moon, but he loved My Many Colored Days.
Other than the rhyme and cadence, the book is nothing like any of other book by Dr. Seuss. But that’s because he didn’t illustrate it. He did, however, capture the essence of color and our moods.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 89
Generally, I’m the first one in the office in the morning. I’m not any more committed than my co-workers. My kids just have to be at school before 7:30, and since I’m already out and about, I might as well go to work.
The other day, I opened the door to the sound of a cricket that was trapped somewhere in our building.
It continued to chirp most of the day. And every time it did, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood books.
The Cricket in Times Square tells the story of Chester, a cricket from Connecticut who takes a train into New York City. He makes a home at a newsstand in Times Square where he plays classical music.
I loved the story about someone with an unusual gift who expands his horizons and finds an nontraditional place to make a difference.
That always makes me smile.
