365 Reasons to Smile – Day 89

Generally, I’m the first one in the office in the morning. I’m not any more committed than my co-workers. My  kids just have to be at school before 7:30, and since I’m already out and about, I might as well go to work.The_Cricket_in_Times_Square

The other day, I opened the door to the sound of a cricket that was trapped somewhere in our building.

It continued to chirp most of the day. And every time it did, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood books.

The Cricket in Times Square tells the story of Chester, a cricket from Connecticut who takes a train into New York City. He makes a home at a newsstand in Times Square where he plays classical music.

I loved the story about someone with an unusual gift who expands his horizons and finds an nontraditional place to make a difference.

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 16

musicI came home from work on Friday bone-weary tired.

My daughter was in a local theater production this past weekend, which means the previous week was “tech week.”

When I volunteered in community theater, we adults called it “hell week.” And there’s a reason.

The rehearsals go late and tempers run short. I still haven’t caught up on my lost sleep, and even though I love the joy my daughter has for performing, I’ve definitely been off my game.

But when I came home Friday, my son was playing piano.  When I left to take the dog for a walk, he was still playing piano.

When I came back from walking the dog, he was practicing his trumpet.

And even though the sound wasn’t exactly pacifying, it definitely made me happy.

Because listening to my son pursue his passion always makes me smile.
