365 Reasons to Smile – Day 92
I’m absolutely in love with the camera on my phone. I never thought I could love technology so much, but having access to a camera at all times has allowed me to capture moments that I never would have otherwise.
Whether the photos are of my children, my pets, nature or historic events, they always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 91
I pretty much like everything about fall with the exception of the stink bugs and squirrels.
I’ll always dislike stink bugs, but I don’t always dislike squirrels. I just have an issue with them in the fall because they go from being cute critters to being dangerous rodents.
Their transformation is directly related to walnuts falling from the trees. The more walnuts that fall, the more dangerous the squirrels become.
They are like addicts going after the next fix, and they’ll risk almost anything to get it. Sometimes that means running almost directly under my German Shepherd’s nose while he’s on a leash. The squirrels are never at much risk of being hurt by my dog when he lunges, but I am. There have been a couple of times when I feared having my shoulder torn out of its socket.
But the squirrels’ courage around my dog is nothing compared to their courage on roads. When I’m behind the wheel of a car, I generally don’t notice the squirrels that stalk the roads just waiting for nuts to fall. But when I’m on my bicycle, I notice. And when a nut does fall, there isn’t just a mad dash to get it. There’s a competition.
The squirrels certainly don’t care if there is someone on a bike hurtling down a hill right at them. They run in front of the bicycle anyway.
Which is why I’m glad that I just had my bike serviced and the brakes work.
And I have proof that they work well. They work really, really well – even under dire circumstances.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 90
The year my friend Michele’s mother died, I remember discussing good years and bad years.
The essence of our conversation was that we categorize the most memorable events of our lives by the year they occurred. Because of that, we automatically label certain years as good or bad.
Based on that, the year 2013 has been a bad year. People I care about are hurting.
Some are dealing with addiction in their family.
Some are dealing with divorce.
Some are dealing with employment issues.
And some are dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. Again.
Even worse, all of these individuals have incredible compassion for others. They are selfless and generous and, most importantly, they are positive. They talk about moving on and about miracles.
Most of all, they don’t define life through their own experiences but rather through the experiences of those they’ve touched.
Some day when I’m more removed from immediate crises, I will reflect back on the year 2013. Even though I’ve experienced more sorrow than celebration, I don’t know that I could ever categorize this as a bad year.
I will simply categorize it as a year that my friends became my heroes.
And that will always make me smile.

Generally, I’m the first one in the office in the morning. I’m not any more committed than my co-workers. My kids just have to be at school before 7:30, and since I’m already out and about, I might as well go to work.
The other day, I opened the door to the sound of a cricket that was trapped somewhere in our building.
It continued to chirp most of the day. And every time it did, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood books.
The Cricket in Times Square tells the story of Chester, a cricket from Connecticut who takes a train into New York City. He makes a home at a newsstand in Times Square where he plays classical music.
I loved the story about someone with an unusual gift who expands his horizons and finds an nontraditional place to make a difference.
That always makes me smile.

In November 1995, I attended a conference in Phoenix, Arizona that also provided the opportunity for a mini-vacation. A friend and I arrived several days early so we could relax and do some sightseeing.
At the top of our list was a day trip to the Grand Canyon, but the day we arrived in Arizona all the national headlines warned that the federal government was going to shut down.
It did. And every national park was closed except for the Grand Canyon. Apparently, the Arizona governor wanted to keep tourism alive and battled to let the state take over park operations. My friend and I decided we shouldn’t wait to see what happened. We decided to make the trek as soon as possible and left early in the morning to make the unhurried journey north.
It was a very unhurried journey.
We wandered through Jerome and wondered at the beauty of Sedona.
We arrived at the Grand Canyon in late afternoon. There was no one at the entrance, so we didn’t have to pay a fee. Instead, 
we quickly found parking and made our way to the edge of the canyon. Two men from France joined us as we snapped photos, including our feet hanging over the edge. And then we watched the sunset with splashes of pink and gold over the red rock.
That is probably the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.
The next day, we woke to news that Grand Canyon National Park had officially been closed.
Sometimes, timing is everything.
And that always makes me smile.

I’m not a fatalist. I don’t believe that whatever will be will be and that I have absolutely no control over my life.
At the same time, I certainly don’t believe I’m completely in control.
Take, for example, my first job out of college.
I’d spent all of my life saying that I liked almost any type of music but country. Then, the day after I graduated, I received a phone call from the news director at, you guessed it, a country music station. I hadn’t submitted my resume or applied for a job. An acquaintance had mentioned I was graduating and might be interested.The job wasn’t at all what I had planned for myself, but I took it.
That was at the same time Garth Brooks was storming onto the music scene. And yes, I admit, I become a closet country music fan.
I never would have asked that my career began in country music, but I can’t complain about where that job led. Or where it is still taking me. Nor can I say that I listen to much country music these days, but I definitely don’t turn it off when my daughter is listening. And I still love Garth Brooks.

It’s my favorite time of year. I can’t think of anything I don’t like about fall, but there is a whole lot I love: the cooler temperatures; the deep reds, oranges and yellows of the changing leaves; and, most of all, the local farms and orchards.
As soon as they start marketing their corn mazes and pumpkin patches, I know the apples are being harvested.
I made my first trip to a local orchard a couple of weeks ago and filled a large bag full of apples.
That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 85
Most people know, I love to ride my bike on country roads. But since I live on the edge of the city limits, I’m forced to go through busy intersections before I hit the open road.
Generally, I don’t pay much attention to the cars that go by except for when people I know honk or wave at me.
But when I was coming home the other day, I had to stop for a red light while vehicles exited from the interstate. Since I had nothing to do but wait, I watched the cars speed off the exit ramp and onto the road that runs near my house. As I saw their light turning yellow, I prepared to go through the intersection. But as my light turned green and the other light turned red, I observed the driver on the exit ramp who’d been caught by the red light. The gesture he made with his middle finger was an obvious sign he was upset.
Then he looked at me and tried to pretend he hadn’t made it. He smiled and waved, and as I rode through the intersection, I smiled and waved back.
I don’t really know the man other than for the times we’ve greeted each other at church on Sunday mornings. Because of that, he probably doesn’t know me either and therefore doesn’t know that I really don’t care that he flipped the bird at a traffic signal.
What I do know is that no one is perfect, but sharing the specifics of that secret with another person always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 84
I admit it. A decade ago when my son started reading the Captain Underpants series, the books also entertained me.
The books by Dav Pilkey follow the adventures of two fourth grade students who create their own comics and hypnotize their principal, who changes into Captain Underpants. The books poke fun at teachers and school principals and adults in general. The lack of respect for authority and the bathroom humor are problem the primary reasons the series tops this year’s list of most frequently challenged books.
But from my own experience, bathroom humor is exactly what appeals to children. Kids WANT to read it.
And anything that gets kids reading always makes me smile.

When Anne Frank named her diary Kitty, she never realized that the it would become an international best seller.
She just knew that she needed some place to express her inner-most thoughts and, later, to document life in incredibly challenging circumstances.
In doing so, she made the Holocaust personal for millions.
When I was young, the Holocaust seemed like ancient history. Now, I realize only a few short years separate Anne’s death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp from my birth into a middle-class family in the United States.
But Anne was born at the wrong time in the wrong place.
By the time she was four-years old, the Nazi government was in power and had organized a massive propaganda campaign to win the loyalty and cooperation of Germans. This included taking control of newspapers, magazines, books, music, movies and radio. Any point of view that even appeared to threaten Nazi beliefs was censored.
During the spring of 1933, Nazi student organizations, professors and librarians developed lists of books they thought were threatening. On May 10, 1933, Nazis raided libraries and bookstores and threw books into huge bonfires. More than 25,000 books were burned. Some were works of Jewish writers, including Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. Most of the books were by non-Jewish writers, including Americans Jack London, Helen Keller, Ernest Hemingway and Sinclair Lewis.
Ironically, decades later, there were efforts to ban The Diary of Anne Frank from American schools and libraries.
I’m just glad the words in her diary were louder than the protests.
That always makes me smile.
