365 Reasons to Smile – Day 126
When I was in college, I remember completing a questionnaire for someone’s class project. Supposedly, the university was going to follow up with respondents in fifteen years to determine whether we had accomplished what we’d hoped. Since I moved several times after college, and my parents moved a couple of times, I’ll never know if anyone ever tried to contact me.
But since I specifically remember what I predicted about my future, I know I didn’t accomplish what I expected.
And I’m really glad I didn’t.
My life and my career have been unpredictable, and therefore much richer, than I had ever hoped.
And that always makes me smile.

Daylight Savings Time ended at 1:59 AM on Sunday, November 3, 2013.
Personally, I think the whole changing clocks forward or backward is pointless, but in order to abide by societal norms, I am forced to comply with the nonsense.
The recent time change has definitely put a cramp in my style, especially my exercise style.
I’m not a big believer in riding my bike in the dark, so I’ve been trying to accommodate.
Making accommodations is getting harder every day.
Yesterday, I made the mistake of taking time to talk to a neighbor and play with her dog.
As a result, I competed with the sunset. I wanted to get home before it went over the horizon.
The sunset won. Sort of.
Because I actually let it take the lead when I stopped to capture pictures of the November Sky.
I may have arrived home after the sun did, but the risk was well worth it.
The constantly changing sky always makes me smile.

Election day on Tuesday had more significance than a much appreciated end to constant commercials about the Virginia Governor’s race.
My brother was on the ballot for a seat on his local board of education. An email from my mother yesterday confirmed that he;d won, but it confirmed something else as well.
We can’t deny our genes.
More than 30 years ago, my mother won her own seat on the local board of education.
There’s something to be said for parents who live a life that inspires their children.
That always makes me smile.

I recently heard that NBC has cast Carrie Underwood to be Maria in a live performance of The Sound of Music in December.
I don’t get it. (I really don’t have an opinion about the choice of Carrie Underwood, I just don’t understand why NBC is trying to remake such a classic movie.)
Movies are classics for a reason. It’s not just the story or the actors or the dialogue or even the music. It’s that magical chemistry of all the elements coming together perfectly.
The Sound of Music is one of those movies. I can’t imagine that anyone can recreate that absolutely perfect moment when Christopher Plummer tells Julie Andrews “You can’t marry someone when you’re in love with someone else, can you?”
I’ve probably seen that scene 100 times, and it always makes me smile.

There is something incredibly inspirational about people who overcome great odds, and, in the process, make the world better place for the rest of us.
Most of these individuals didn’t just do great things, they also said great things. Their words will be inspiration for generations to come.
As a young girl, I became fascinated and inspired with the story of Helen Keller. I always figured if she could do great things, maybe I could too. And even though she couldn’t hear or see, she could still express herself beautifully.
Her story always makes me smile.

Growing up, my dad teased that I could be John Travolta’s little sister. I can’t say that was much of a compliment, but I tolerated Dad’s teasing because, during my limited television viewing time, I always watched John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino on Welcome Back Kotter.
To this day, I’m convinced the only reason I watched Welcome Back Kotter was to listen to the theme song. After the song played, I’d do something else while Horseshack laughed and Epstein produced excuses from his mother.
But I just loved the theme song.
To this day, no matter what the circumstances, I still love that song.
There’s something important in the message about coming back to a place you thought you wanted to leave behind only to realize that’s actually where you belonged all along.
That message always makes me smile.

Not many television shows make me laugh out loud, but the Big Bang Theory does.
All of the characters are, well, characters, and the most endearing is Sheldon Cooper. I’m just not sure why.
It’s probably the witty writing and the snappy delivery, because I have no doubt that I’d have a difficult time tolerating Sheldon in real life. His narcissistic attitude and constant belittlement of others are actually indecent. But, like other narcissists, Sheldon doesn’t realize how obnoxious he is.
Thankfully, Sheldon isn’t real, and I don’t have to tolerate him. I just have to enjoy him and his plethora of amusing quotes.
They always make me smile.

Growing up, I was always expected to do my best and to try my hardest. But I was never expected to be perfect or to go through life without making mistakes.
I was, however, taught to admit and own my mistakes.
As an adult, I’m constantly surprised by people who can’t admit they made a mistake and instead point fingers at others when something goes wrong.
No one is perfect, but we all are human. Part of being a good human is accepting responsibility for our actions and appreciating, rather than blaming. others.
Good parents don’t just teach that to their children. They live a life that demonstrates it.
I had parents who did, and that always makes me smile.

If someone were to ask me what makes my life fantastic, the fact that I have an eclectic group of friends that cross generational, gender and political lines would rise to the top of my list.
People who are different from me make my life so much more interesting.
Take, for example, my friend Dave. Dave, like my father, is nearing 80, and, also like my father, is a great cheerleader.
On Wednesday evening, he left me a voicemail message that I hope I can save forever. He was congratulating me on a job I just accepted, and the message included the phrases, “I want to congratulate you on a damn smart move,” and “when I talked to you the other day, I thought I’m not going to ask any more because It’s none of my damn business, but you are the absolute right person for that job. Thank God for small favors.”
That message made me grin, and my diverse friends always make me smile.

My kids are at an age when they are starting to put aside childish ways, but they are not yet putting aside traditions.
They still enjoy decorating Christmas cookies, hunting for Easter eggs and turning pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns. They don’t just enjoy these activities, they expect them.
I know the day will arrive when pumpkins will stay pumpkins during Halloween.
But for the moment, the jack-o-lanterns on my front porch and in my driveway always make me smile.
