365 Reasons to Smile – Day 312
I stopped to vote on my way to work yesterday morning.
I talked with a polling place volunteer whom I know, voted and was getting back in my car when I saw a colleague walking in. We chatted, then I went to get gas, where I ran into an acquaintance who was running for board of education.
By the time I arrived at my office, I was counting my blessings: I live in a community – not just a town or a location. I am surrounded by people who care about and are engaged in that community. And most of all, I am blessed with privilege of voting for people to help lead that community- even if I don’t always like the outcome.
Knowing that I, and others, take our citizenship responsibilities seriously will always make me smile.

My Mother’s Hands
I had a shock the other day while typing.
I looked down and realized that, despite my best efforts to never have my mother’s hands, I had failed.
Growing up, I was always very aware that my mother’s hands didn’t look like those of my friends’ mothers.
Her fingers never sparkled with jewelry or nail polish. The only ring she ever wore was a simple gold band on her left hand, and her nails were always cut short so dirt couldn’t accumulate under them. She never considered polishing them, and, as a teenager, I brought the first bottle of nail polish into our house.
Neither were my mother’s hands soft. They were rough from all the tasks she required of them.
And she required a great deal.
When I was a child, she always had a meal on the table, her house was always spotless and the laundry was always done and hung on the line to dry. She canned and froze the vegetables and fruits my dad grew in his large garden and she sewed almost all the clothes I wore. She made bread from scratch and biscuits from memory. As a Girl Scout leader, she taught me how to start a fire, put up a tent and forge a trail. And when she wasn’t being a mom, she was a photographer and a journalist. She dragged my brother and me from everything to train wrecks to hippie communes to worm farms.
By the time her day was over, she didn’t have the time, energy or interest to soak her hands or massage them with lotion. Her hands were too busy turning the pages of a book.
I was an adult before I realized that I had no reason to be embarrassed by my mother’s hands. They were simply a reflection of whom she is, which isn’t whom I am at all.
I don’t like to cook, and my house is never spotless. I haven’t canned or frozen any vegetables since she stood at my side teaching me. And I refuse to sew anything.
And yet, as heredity would have it, I now have my mother’s hands not because I have labored as she did but because I have labored in my own ways.
My hands, like her hands, are rarely idle. My hands, like her hands, have chosen meaningful work over vanity. And my hands, like her hands, have taken care of two children in the best way they know how.
As I look down at my hands now, I am no longer shocked or even bothered. Instead I am proud that they reflect who I am: one in a long line of women who are true to themselves, true to their families and true to their beliefs.
Even if we aren’t true to fashion.
Editing My Life
There are times when I think back to the person I used to be, and I realize I wouldn’t like her.
Scratch that.
I probably would have liked the REAL person I used to be. What I wouldn’t like is how she presented herself to the rest of the world.
What I needed was an editor: someone who adjusted my words (and actions) so they took into account the perspective of others and helped me better explain where I was really coming from.
Take, for example my test taking experiences as a teenager.
I’d take a test then complain to everyone around me that I had failed. When I’d get back a 94 or a 96 out of 100, the other students would groan,roll their eyes and show their basic irritation that I had lied about failing.What they didn’t understanding was that I hadn’t lied. To me, any score less than perfect was a failure. I hated falling short.
What I didn’t get was that some students really failed – even when they did their best.
If I’d had an editor, he/she would have told me that failure really is a relative term and instead of proclaiming it, I should have said I wish I’d done better.
Recently, instead of worrying about a score on a graded test, I find myself worrying that I’m falling short in various aspects of my life. I’ve come to realize that I still need an editor. Life experience is a good editor, but it’s not perfect.
Maybe that’s because I still expect myself to excel at everything I attempt, and when I fall short, I focus too much on my imperfections.
A good editor would tell me that life is as much about the experience than it is about the outcome, and I should appreciate the experiences.
Maybe that’s because I still find myself judging people by the standards I set for myself, and when don’t show the same passion, or they blame others for their shortfalls or when they just show up rather than commit to making a difference, I get irritated.
A good editor would tell me that judging someone never provides any insight. Giving people the opportunity to tell their own stories in their own words does.
And maybe it’s because I worry that there is so much to accomplish.
A good editor would tell me that any thought, belief or desire that we actually put in writing is an opportunity to touch lives and influence others. Once our words leave our care, we can’t control who is actually listening or reading. We just have to trust that the right person will hear them.
There are times when I wonder how I will someday look back and view the person I am today. And I wonder if I’ll still note how I needed an editor.
That’s when I realize that I am actually my own best editor.
All I need to do is listen and follow her advice.
Nellie Oleson and Other Monsters
There is nothing worse than realizing your childhood nightmare is actually a reality.
As a child, my monsters were people who thought they were better than others because they were attractive or had money.
As an adult, I’ve discovered that I actually live among such monsters.
Growing up, these monsters were portrayed as fictional characters like Nellie Oleson from the television show Little House on the Prairie.
To most people, that show was about family.
To me, it was an epic battle of good and evil.
Good was represented by the hard-working Ingalls family, and evil was represented by Nellie Oleson and her mother. The ambivalence of society was represented by Nellie’s father who rarely stood up to his wife and his manipulative and self-centered daughter, Nellie.
Nellie thought she was better than others because her family had money and other families didn’t. Not only that, but she actually looked down at people who didn’t have the same resources.
As a child, I never understood how anyone could actually like Nellie, who never did anything to earn her pretty dresses and easy lifestyle.
As an adult, I am amazed that I still have to battle such monsters.
These monsters rear their ugly heads in the form of women who have never had to work to support their family. They have married men with good jobs and depended on their husbands for money. (And for the record, living on a budget in college or in early adulthood isn’t poverty). At the same time, they belittle the working poor and call them lazy. Here’s my advice: If you have never had to support a family on your income alone, you have no right to judge others.
These monsters bear their teeth when their beliefs about social status are challenged. Here’s my advice: Don’t open your mouth about poverty unless you have either experienced it yourself or have spent time with those who have.
Finally, these monsters avoid people who struggle as though they carry some type of disease. Here’s my advice: Surround yourself with people who are different than you. Not only will you become a more well-rounded and educated person, you might discover others have a great deal to offer.
This week, I had a realization that I can never slay the monsters I feel as though I am always battling.
But I did realize I have every right to walk around these monsters and keep going.
And if enough people join me, we can show the monsters how we really feel.
365 Reasons to Smile – Day 273
I love celebrations, and yesterday I was fortunate to attend a naturalization ceremony. It is the first such ceremony I have ever attended, but I certainly hope it is not the last.
There was something incredibly inspirational about the 39 individuals from 24 countries who not only made the decision to become a U.S. Citizen, but passed all the hurdles to become one. Their ages ranged from teenagers to senior citizens, but they were all smiling.
So was I.
Witnessing people achieve a goal always makes me smile.

I try very hard not to let my emotions get the better of me, particularly at work.
Yesterday I failed horribly when I reacted poorly to a situation in which I felt as though I was being portrayed in an unfavorable way.
Then someone else reminded me that my emotional reaction was stooping to the same level as the person bothering me and I just needed to let it go and let it be.
The advise was just what I needed to hear.
We can never control what other people think about us or what they say about us. We can only control how we react. I need to remember that, and one of the best reminders is the Beatles song “Let It Be.”
Not only is it a great message, it always makes me smile.

I admit it. I worry about eating meals with other people. I like food, and I like people. I just don’t digest food well when I am forced to eat with someone who bothers me.
One of my least favorite things is eating a meal while sitting next to people who can’t engage in conversation, who only talk about themselves or who simply annoy me.
On the flip side, there is nothing I like more than eating with a group that is composed of only people I enjoy being around. I’m lucky to be part of such a group.
That always makes me smile.

I live very close to my office, so the drive home generally takes less than ten minutes. I usually consider that a good thing, but the other day I wanted my drive to last longer.
I had delayed leaving because of a heavy rain, but the storm didn’t last very long. And as I walked across parking lot, I noticed a rainbow arching across the sky in front of me.
I chased that rainbow all the way home.
Even though I, like everyone else, never caught the end of the rainbow, I certainly enjoyed trying.
I’ve always thought the pure joy in following a rainbow is the real pot of gold at its end.
And that thought always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 253
When my children were young, I dreaded play dates at our house. Well, I didn’t dread the play dates. I dreaded that the play dates came with mothers attached, and I always felt the need for my house to be clean when they came. Since, I’m not a naturally clean person, the hours before the play date were generally filled by manic cleaning.
These days, when my children”get together” with friends, I generally only see other parents when I wave from the front door. That means, I stress less about the condition of my house.
That’s why I was amused the other day when my son was excited that we had purchased a new vacuum cleaner. He wanted to clean his “teen cave” in the basement before a friend came over.
I am under no illusion that he inherited some mutant “clean” gene, and I know his concern was probably related to the fact that the cat’s litter box is in the basement. But his interest in cleaning made me smile anyway.

I’m a Social Worker, Not a Stereotype
Back in the early 1990’s when I worked for the WV AIDS Program, some people assumed I was a lesbian.
Now that I work for Catholic Charities, some people assume I’m Catholic.
Neither assumption ever bothered me even though they were wrong.
But when people make assumptions about social workers, I have a deep-seated desire to say “Dammit Jim, I’m a social worker not a stereotype.”
I don’t believe that giving handouts will save the world. I don’t believe that I have to hug and empathize with everyone I encounter. And most of all, I don’t believe anyone with a good heart can do my job.
In reality, most social workers I know don’t believe in just giving handouts. We also know that if we don’t provide people with the basic resources they need, they certainly aren’t going to be able or open to making tough decisions that may help them improve their circumstances.. What social workers do believe is that people can change and that we should never give up on anyone. We also believe that no one is more important or more “worthy” than any other person. Most of all, we believe that people are responsible for their own lives. Sometimes. they simply need more support to accomplish their goals.
Also, in contrast to popular opinion, not every social worker has a warm and fuzzy personality. We don’t see life through rose-colored glasses and we don’t always see the best in people. We realize that some people survive by scamming others, that there are individuals who will do their best to “manipulate” the system and that there are people who are just plain lazy. We also know that not everyone had the advantages of growing up in a family that treasured children, respected boundaries and believed in delayed gratification. Poverty isn’t just about lack of money but about lack of support. Being able to provide that support is what motivates us.
Most of all, not just anyone can do our jobs. This past week, I was in a meeting with an individual who helps low-income families. As she gave her report, the fact that she is not a social worker became obvious. She was discussing a situation in which an individual didn’t want to complete an application for assistance without his friend.
“Maybe he couldn’t read,” I suggested.
“Oh, no,” she said. “I’ve had people tell me they couldn’t read. He didn’t say that. He just said he wanted to wait for his friend before he completed the form.”
I wanted to scream. I’m pretty sure the other social workers in the room also wanted to scream but didn’t. That’s
because social workers try very hard to be non-judgmental. And sometimes we fail miserably. I should know. There have been so many times over the past few years when I’ve wanted to scream at people who think doing nice things for poor people is social work. Being nice to low-income people has nothing to do with social work, which requires a college degree and a license. Many social workers help low-income people, but their job is not to be nice (although most are). Their job is to help individuals and families help themselves.
So instead of screaming, I strategize. I think about how we can engage low-income, middle class and wealthy individuals in supporting those who are struggling. I think about how we can educate all people about inequality. Most of all, I think about what I can do to convince everyone that all people matter.
And then, I act.
Because that’s what social workers do.
