365 Reasons to Smile – Day 115

randy pauschWhen I left my first professional job after college, my boss presented me with a plaque that read, “Experience Is What You Get When You Didn’t Get What You Wanted.”

That was 1990.

Randy Pausch is now credited for the quote in the Last Lecture.  Of course, he added “And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.”

His addition to the quote puts all of my experiences in perspective.

Life isn’t about everything going our way.  Life is about learning to make the most of every situation.

Realizing that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 114

Years ago, someone said words that have always resonated with me:  “There will always be people who resist change no matter what it is. At the other end of the continuum are people who want change just for the sake of change. To be successful, you just need to focus on the people in the middle.”

Sometimes, I am the person in the middle;  I know change will be good, but I want to make sure the change is the right one.

Sometimes, it is, and sometimes it isn’t.

But no matter what, when change occurs, it is always an adventure.

And that always makes me smile.

A Movie Moment

Life is comprised of millions of moments.Cardinals Win

Some are significant, and some aren’t. Some have a long-lasting impact on us, and some don’t. And some are memorable, and some are easily forgotten.

The moments that make headlines either tell us about events that will affect us or are intended to engage or entertain us.

But the moments that help shape who we are and who we are becoming are often less dramatic or public. But sometimes they are, and in those rare occasions, they might get a brief nod in the back pages of a newspaper.

Such were the events of last Friday night.

Anyone who attended the Spring Mills High School football on Friday night probably recognized the events had everything a good Hollywood script requires, including an ordinary beginning.

Students, parents and community members trickled into the stadium to the sounds of rock music. The football team, cheerleaders and band warmed up. And the announcers checked the sound system.

The only thing outwardly unusual about this Friday night was the biting cold and the students who came dressed in costumes.

“It’s the last football game before Halloween,’ the younger sibling of one student told me. “Of course they are going to dress in costume.” She then puffed up a bit. “My sister is the one in the poodle skirt.”

Almost on cue, the night became magical.

When the band played the national anthem, the whole stadium was unusually silent. Even the younger students who are generally unruly, paid tribute. Later, when a boy didn’t have enough money to buy a hot chocolate at the concession stand, an adult offered him change. The boy looked at him in awe and said, “thank you, sir,” at least three times.

And then there was the game itself.

Spring Mills High School, which has no senior class and, until Friday, had never won a football game, scored 14 points in the first half.

The other team didn’t score anything.

For the first time since August, our team had hope.

During the third quarter, the other team tied the score, and that hope began to diminish until Spring Mills scored another touchdown.

As the final seconds of the game ticked down, the energy in the frigid stadium went up. When the final buzzer sounded, the student body rushed the football field and celebrated for a long, long time.

Some students may have been celebrating a win for the sake of winning. Others may have been celebrating the football team’s history making moment. And others were celebrating the individual successes of all the young men who had persevered.

One by one, the students left the field. Then the football team left the field. And then, finally, the band members left the field.

The band, like the football team, is new this year, and it, like the football team, is smaller than those of other high schools.

But, for the first time ever, as it marched off the field after a football game, the band played in celebration. The band parents in the concession stand stopped what we were doing and started clapping and cheering and crying.

The moment was movie perfect until the young girl, who hours before had bragged her sister was wearing a poodle skirt, came back. In child-like innocence she said, “Did you see the other team? The looked so sad when they left the field, Their heads were hanging down.”

For an instance, I felt guilty about all the jubilation.

But then, I realized we weren’t really celebrating our defeat of another team or the points on the scoreboard. We were celebrating the community we are becoming. For the first time, we had collectively experienced a memory that will stay with us the rest of our lives.

There were no reporters and television crews at the game, and the victory received only a brief mention in the local newspaper.

But for those of us who were there, the script for that evening unfolded in a way usually reserved only for movies, and we will all carry that perfect movie moment with us forever.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 113

wooly caterpillerWooly Bear Caterpillars are supposed to predict how bad the coming winter will be. I’m not exactly sure how they are supposed to predict bad weather, but I it has something to do with what percentage of their bodies are brown and what percentage is black.

All I really know is that I’ve been seeing a significant number of Wooly Bear Caterpillars during the past few weeks, and the only thing their appearance has predicted to me is the seasons are changing.is the changing season.

But there is something incredibly comforting in that. No matter what the past year has brought, the caterpillars are a symbol that life goes on. They are also a reminder that even though life may not go on in the way that we hope or want,  it will still go on.

And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 112

The behavior of politicians in Washington D.C. and ongoing battles about the role of government, we sometimes forget about all that makes starspangledbannerAmerica great.

I was reminded last night at my son’s high school home football game.

Despite cold temperatures and our team’s dismal record, there were still plenty of teenagers and parents in attendance.  From my spot in the concession stand, I could hear multiple conversations and laughter.

And then there was silence.

Children, adolescents and adults were all standing at attention as the band began to play the Star Spangled Banner.  No one was talking or laughing, and no one was ignoring the flag. I expect to see adults do this, but I was moved by the unsupervised adolescents who were showing respect.

For just a moment, we were all truly united, and that always makes me smile.

My son in the marching band

My son in the marching band

My husband and I often joke that the annual Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival parade in our town is the same every year. And yet, every year, we stake out our place on the sidewalk outside our church and enjoy the show.

Maybe it’s because, even though the parade may not change much,  the children who participate in it do. Maybe it’s because we love the opportunity to experience some hometown pride. Or maybe we simply enjoy a tradition that celebrates the simpler side of life.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 105

No matter what I am doing, I always have same reaction when I hear a certain piece of music.

When I’m with others, they usually have the same reaction I do.

We bounce our shoulders and bob our heads.

And we smile.

Thinking about the Peanuts gang dancing always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 104

balloonsI’m sure my parents worried about me a bit when I was a teenager. Actually, they worried about me a lot when I was a teenager.

But I have no doubt some of their worries were directly related to they way I decorated my room. I didn’t have a room indicative of teenage rebellion or angst. My room was decorated with balloons and items featuring balloons.

The obsession might have appeared to be a bit juvenile to those who didn’t know “the code.”

“The code” was born when friends and I were volunteering at a booth at a summer fair. We had the task of filling balloons with helium, tying them with strings and handing them to children.

Part of our motivation for volunteering was the opportunity to watch teenage boys. At some point during our volunteer work, we decided that our code word for a good-looking guy was “balloon” and that a good-looking guy with a girlfriend was a “balloon with a string.”

The code stuck, and for at least a year, we thought we were clever. And I thought I was even more clever for decorating my room with balloons.

In retrospect, I don’t think the concept was all that clever.  But my memory of those balloons always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 103

MorganfreemanSeveral times a year, I see headlines or internet posts about celebrities “before they were stars.”

Personally, with the exception of one person, I don’t really care.

And that one person has always been a star to me.

When I was a child, I absolutely LOVED watching The Electric Company.  I believed the educational value was beneath me, but the show was pure entertainment.  I particularly loved the actor who played all the cool roles, including Dracula.

Years later, when Morgan Freeman became famous with adult audiences, I wasn’t surprised.

When he was on The Electric Company, he always made me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 102

Ispidern a dark, unlit corner of our furnace room, there are shelves lined with tubs for every holiday. Most of the tubs hold Christmas decorations, but there is a tub for Easter and two tubs for Halloween.

This past weekend, I took a lantern into the space, found the Halloween tubs and dragged them upstairs.

As I was pulling out wreaths, lights and decorations, something tickled my ear.

I brushed at it then continued to work. Then I felt a tickle on my forehead and brushed at it again.

A huge spider dropped to the floor and began to scamper away.

I admit I was a bit freaked out, and my thoughts immediately jumped to the possibility that it was a brown recluse spider. But there was a another part of me that felt sorry for the spider and guilty that I had disturbed it.

I managed to coax it onto a hanger and carry it to freedom outside.

Later, after my heart stopped beating so hard, I realized I’d never even considered killing it.

Recognizing I can be kind even when I’m scared always makes me smile.
