365 Reasons to Smile – Day 101
This weekend, my daughter had a couple of her friends for a sleep over while my son was sleeping at a friend’s house. But even though my son was not actually at home, he was definitely present during the sleep over at my house.
Upon my son’s recommendation, the girls decided to watch “the worst movie ever,” which, according to Shepherd, is Troll 2. After some debate about the PG-13 rating, the girls were allowed to watch the movie. I enjoyed the giggles and laughter from another room. After watching the movie, my daughter declared, “That really is the worst movie ever. It was so bad, it was good.”
The next day, when I picked my son up at his friend’s, I told him the girls had watched Troll 2. My son doesn’t smile much, but when he does it’s a broad, infectious grin. He gave me that grin and laughed. “That is the worst movie ever. I can’t believe they watched it. I think I told them to do that.” I told him that was why they’d watched it.
Keeping the peace in my house is often be difficult. My children have very different personalities and very different tastes. Except for politics, they rarely agree on anything. My daughter loves pork chops and mashed potatoes. My son hates them. My son loves jalapeno peppers and Buffalo Wings. My daughter hates them.
But apparently they agree that Troll 2 is the worst movie ever.
My children agreeing on anything always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 100
Everyone thinks that the first students to attend a new high school are very lucky. And in many ways, they are. But in some ways, they aren’t.
Take, for example, my son’s new marching band. Last year, during his freshman band experience at an established high school, he suffered through a grueling band camp and long rehearsals. In return, his band traveled all over the state, and sometimes even out-of-state, for competitions.
This year, there are no seniors at his brand new high school, so the band is already much smaller. And the new school wasn’t even available for rehearsals, so the band had to use the middle school. Band camp was shortened as a result of all faculty being required to take courses about the technology at the brand new school, Worst of all, the band doesn’t have a budget for traveling to competitions. Raising that money is the responsibility of the boosters, which didn’t even exist until a couple of months ago.
The band does have brand new uniforms, and it does get to play home games on an amazing new football field. In fact, this weekend’s band competition, sponsored by another high school, was moved to their field after several days of rain.
The small band did its job, and the parents were some of the loudest fans in the stands.
The band won its division.
As my son noted, his band is the only one in the division, but at least it got first place.
Looking on the bright side always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 99
Yesterday, I did something I’ve never done as an adult.
I entered a race. I can’t say I really competed, but I completed. And in doing so, I spent some time with friends and some time challenging myself.
I’ve always been hesitant to enter races, mostly because I’m generally an incredibly competitive person, and I hate to do something if I know I’m not going to excel.
But seeing that same tendency in my daughter, I’ve decided to take baby steps toward challenging myself to try something new with no expectations other than to enjoy myself.
And guess what?
I did it.
I may even enter another race. Or maybe I’ll try something else, like singing in public. Well, maybe I won’t go that far. But at least I’m learning that doing things for fun rather than striving for perfection really can make me smile.

A Portrait of Jesus
This past week, while much of the news focused on Congress, the debt ceiling and the federal shutdown, another story caught my attention.

A school district in Jackson, Ohio agreed to take down a portrait of Jesus that had been hanging in a school since 1947. The district is not removing the portrait because, after 66 years, it realized that the portrait might be a violation of separation of church and state. It’s removing it for financial reasons.
In February, the ACLU of Ohio and the Freedom From Religion Foundation sued the Jackson City School District for “endorsing one religion improperly.” The school attempted to argue that the portrait was part of a “limited public forum” but eventually agreed in court to remove it to avoid “risking taxpayer money.”
The actual story wasn’t what caught my attention. I’ve read about plenty of similar stories over the past couple of decades. What caught my attention was someone’s reaction to it.
“This is why are country is in trouble,” the person wrote. “We are turning our backs on Christianity.”
I couldn’t have agreed with that statement more. I just agreed for entirely different reasons.
I don’t believe many of our leaders or citizens are acting in a way that Jesus wanted.
From what I know about Jesus, he didn’t care about himself. He cared about everyone else. EVERYONE else – regardless of socioeconomic status, criminal status or religion. He simply cared about people and did all he could to help them while trying to teach all of us to do the same.
I can’t imagine the Jesus that I know would care whether or not his portrait was on a wall in a school. My guess is that he probably wouldn’t want it there. He didn’t want his image (or what a lot of people consider his image) to be worshiped.
The type of worship he wanted was for people to understand his words and behaviors and to practice them every day.
There are those who would argue that the portrait of Jesus in a school was just a reminder for students to listen to his words and to do their best to practice his behaviors. If that is what they believe, I applaud them. But if they are trying to promote Christianity as a religion in which all people should believe, then I do have an issue with that.
I don’t think whether or not someone is a Christian defines whether they are good or bad or worthy or unworthy. But I do believe that Christianity means that, instead of judging others, we love and care for them.
And that’s why I agree with the person who said we are turning our backs on Christianity. My agreement has nothing to do with the label and everything to do with the behavior.
Which is exactly the message Jesus was trying to teach us: it’s all about how we treat others.
365 Reasons to Smile – Day 97
Some days, I get really angry about how unfair life is. Bad things happen to good people, and no matter how hard we try, we can’t understand why. Life’s not fair.
Those of us who are parents often repeat that mantra. At the same time, we have our own questions.
I’m blessed that my own mother provided amazing guidance.
She’s never been a particularly religious person, but she has always been spiritual. As a child, when I was struggling with not getting something I thought I deserved, she provided a great piece of advice.
“Don’t ever pray for what you want. Pray that God gives you the strength to deal with what life hands you and the ability to use that strength to make the best of the situation.”
Decades later, the wisdom of those words resonates in so many aspects of my life.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 88
In November 1995, I attended a conference in Phoenix, Arizona that also provided the opportunity for a mini-vacation. A friend and I arrived several days early so we could relax and do some sightseeing.
At the top of our list was a day trip to the Grand Canyon, but the day we arrived in Arizona all the national headlines warned that the federal government was going to shut down.
It did. And every national park was closed except for the Grand Canyon. Apparently, the Arizona governor wanted to keep tourism alive and battled to let the state take over park operations. My friend and I decided we shouldn’t wait to see what happened. We decided to make the trek as soon as possible and left early in the morning to make the unhurried journey north.
It was a very unhurried journey.
We wandered through Jerome and wondered at the beauty of Sedona.
We arrived at the Grand Canyon in late afternoon. There was no one at the entrance, so we didn’t have to pay a fee. Instead, 
we quickly found parking and made our way to the edge of the canyon. Two men from France joined us as we snapped photos, including our feet hanging over the edge. And then we watched the sunset with splashes of pink and gold over the red rock.
That is probably the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.
The next day, we woke to news that Grand Canyon National Park had officially been closed.
Sometimes, timing is everything.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 87
I’m not a fatalist. I don’t believe that whatever will be will be and that I have absolutely no control over my life.
At the same time, I certainly don’t believe I’m completely in control.
Take, for example, my first job out of college.
I’d spent all of my life saying that I liked almost any type of music but country. Then, the day after I graduated, I received a phone call from the news director at, you guessed it, a country music station. I hadn’t submitted my resume or applied for a job. An acquaintance had mentioned I was graduating and might be interested.The job wasn’t at all what I had planned for myself, but I took it.
That was at the same time Garth Brooks was storming onto the music scene. And yes, I admit, I become a closet country music fan.
I never would have asked that my career began in country music, but I can’t complain about where that job led. Or where it is still taking me. Nor can I say that I listen to much country music these days, but I definitely don’t turn it off when my daughter is listening. And I still love Garth Brooks.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 86
It’s my favorite time of year. I can’t think of anything I don’t like about fall, but there is a whole lot I love: the cooler temperatures; the deep reds, oranges and yellows of the changing leaves; and, most of all, the local farms and orchards.
As soon as they start marketing their corn mazes and pumpkin patches, I know the apples are being harvested.
I made my first trip to a local orchard a couple of weeks ago and filled a large bag full of apples.
That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 85
Most people know, I love to ride my bike on country roads. But since I live on the edge of the city limits, I’m forced to go through busy intersections before I hit the open road.
Generally, I don’t pay much attention to the cars that go by except for when people I know honk or wave at me.
But when I was coming home the other day, I had to stop for a red light while vehicles exited from the interstate. Since I had nothing to do but wait, I watched the cars speed off the exit ramp and onto the road that runs near my house. As I saw their light turning yellow, I prepared to go through the intersection. But as my light turned green and the other light turned red, I observed the driver on the exit ramp who’d been caught by the red light. The gesture he made with his middle finger was an obvious sign he was upset.
Then he looked at me and tried to pretend he hadn’t made it. He smiled and waved, and as I rode through the intersection, I smiled and waved back.
I don’t really know the man other than for the times we’ve greeted each other at church on Sunday mornings. Because of that, he probably doesn’t know me either and therefore doesn’t know that I really don’t care that he flipped the bird at a traffic signal.
What I do know is that no one is perfect, but sharing the specifics of that secret with another person always makes me smile.

My daughter’s favorite quote from one of her favorite books

I can’t say I was ever a fan of high school life.
I didn’t have a bad time during my own high school years. In fact, I have great memories from that time.
I just never really got “it.”
I didn’t get why so many of my peers’ conversations revolved around clothes, makeup, appearance and other people’s relationships.
I didn’t get why so many didn’t like learning – or at least pretended they didn’t.
And most of all, I didn’t get why most people defined themselves by the groups with which they associated.
I always feared that when my own children were teenagers, I would have to re-live some of those issues.
But, so far, my children have surprised me.
Neither seems particularly worried about what other people are doing nor about whom they are doing it with. Neither do they seem concerned about what other people think of them.
And I don’t think they are pulling one over on me.
They are both content to pursue their own interests with people who they genuinely like, with no concern about where anyone falls on the social ladder.
Like most parents, I am constantly second guessing myself, and I know there will be plenty of difficult moments ahead.
But for the moment, I am simply content to enjoy kids who think for themselves and are comfortable in their own skin.
That always makes me smile.
