365 Reasons To Smile- Day 206
I adore walking my German Shepherd, Rodney. But since I shattered my wrist, I’m prohibited from walking him when our streets get icy and snow covered. Because I shattered my wrist while walking Rodney on icy and snowy streets, I understand why my husband insists he walk the dog during bad weather.
That doesn’t mean I’m happy about the situation, particularly since I miss his almost daily romps with his best friend Jovi.
Last week, while I was at work, my husband sent me a link to a video of Rodney and Jovi playing in the snow.
That video will always make me smile.

To say the weather has been rather cold lately would be similar to saying fine chocolate is simply good. Additional descriptive words are required to help others understand. At least, words used to be required.
Now. I sometimes think advances in technology are taking our command of language back decades, if not centuries. Take for example, how many people share a photo of their vehicle’s dashboard thermometer to let everyone know what extreme temperatures they are enduring.
Personally, I still like colorful phrases like “It’s so cold your shadow will freeze to the sidewalk” or “It’s so cold my beard shattered when I smiled.”
But then, descriptive phrases, no matter how old and overused, always make me smile

I was working very hard to convince my daughter to watch a classic movie.
She’d have none of it.
“You can’t tell anyone apart. They all have the same haircut and wear suits. The guys that is,” she said.
I paid no attention to my daughter’s complaints and told her we were going to watch Arsenic and Old Lace.
Initially, she acted disinterested. Then she giggled occasionally. Toward the end, she was laughing out loud and commenting.
Classic movies always make me smile.
Watching my children enjoy them makes me smile even more.

I can’t complain about my life. I have a great deal to celebrate and even more for which to be thankful. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t faced tough days and difficult times. There have been times when I’ve spent days in tears and weeks worrying whether life will get any better. 
Logically, I knew things would get better. But emotionally, I sometimes felt as though they wouldn’t.
They always did, of course, and I came out of the situations stronger and wiser.
Which is why, when someone posted a quote on Facebook the other day, I completely appreciated it.
It simply made me smile.

I love to sing. The problem is no one actually wants to hear me sing. A former roommate’s sister once told me, “I admire you,Trina. You sing all the time even though you can’t sing on key.
That was certainly a back-handed compliment, but I understood.
Over the years, I’ve learned to temper my enthusiasm for singing out loud, especially when my children are with me. When I backslide, they quickly remind me.
But there are times when I’m lost in thought and don’t even think about what I’m doing. Yesterday morning, I just couldn’t wake up so I stopped at Sheetz for a cup of coffee. I was putting the lid on my cup when I caught myself singing out loud to the sappy 10cc song “The Things We Do For Love.”
I realized what I was doing when the older employee attending to the area turned and stared at me. I looked ashamed and stopped singing. She gave me a smile and a curious look.
“How do you know that song?” she asked “You’re way too young for that.”
I’m definitely not too young to remember that song, and I told her so. I also told her I appreciated the compliment.
People who underestimate my age always make me smile.

Even though I’ve been trying to maintain a positive attitude, I was dreading my doctor’s appointment this week. At my last appointment, the doctor mentioned the possibility of more surgery to put a plate in my wrist.
I shouldn’t have worried.
Although my wrist isn’t mending perfectly it is, in the doctor’s words, “good enough.”
When he told me his top priority is getting me back the use of my right had as soon as possible, I gave him a great bit grin.
Good news always makes me smile.

I didn’t make an actual New Year’s resolution this year, but I have been making an effort to say and do things with good intentions. I’m actually getting in the habit of checking myself, particularly when I’m irritated or reacting to something or someone that bothers me.
I’m far from perfect, but I’m getting better about asking myself if my reaction will help or hurt the situation or another person.
That sounds simple, but it’s not, especially when I’m trapped in a meeting with a person who annoys me.
That’s just what happened the other day, and I was doing my best to monitor my body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. Then I caught the eye of someone sitting across the table. The individual’s face and body and words were neutral, and yet I could see in his eyes that he was just as annoyed as I was. Somehow, that made the situation completely tolerable,
It also made me smile (but just to myself of course.)

I love my job, and I can’t say enough good things about it. But that doesn’t mean I love everything bout it.
I really don’t like doing monthly reports. When I’m faced with the deadline for submitting them I feel like I did as a child on Saturday mornings.
I’d wake up knowing that, because it was the weekend, I had extra chores to do before I could play. So, I would do the chores first thing then feel both relief that the tasks were done and anticipation about the remainder of the weekend.
Yesterday morning, I sat down at my desk with the same determination I had on Saturday mornings as a child. I would complete the reports by the end of the day so I could spend the rest of the week tackling projects I’d enjoy.
And I did.
But as I hit the send key on the email with the reports attached, I felt something else I used to feel on those Saturday mornings years ago: a sense of accomplishment.
And that feeling always makes me smile.

My childhood bedroom had light purple walls, a gauzy, floral lavender bedspread and a purple and white rug. If a photo of it were placed in a lineup, none of and my adult friends would pick it out as mine. In fact, they would probably pick it as the least likely to have been mine.
My bedroom in my first apartment after college was done entirely in black and white with red accents. Ansel Adams prints hung on the wall and there were no flowers anywhere. Looking back, the room seems rather cold, but at the time I thought it was very mature.
Now, I’m partial to orange and yellows and rooms that feel warm and inviting.
My changing tastes don’t just remind me of where I’ve been and whom I once was. They also remind me that I still don’t know exactly whom I’ll be someday.
That thought always makes me smile.

I can’t say I’ve ever been much of a fan of The Simpsons, but even before the show burst onto the television scene, I was a fan of Matt Groening.
When I was in college, a friend introduced me to his Life in Hell comics, and when I entered the world of adulthood, I splurged to buy several of his books. In those days before the internet or personal computers, my work space was decorated with photo copies of cartoons that held some truth and always made me smile.
They still do.
