365 Reasons To Smile- Day 171
A friend was driving me to a meeting yesterday, and we talked for more than an hour without paying attention to the Christmas music playing softly over the vehicle’s speakers. But, as we neared our destination, a song caught my attention, and I shouted “turn it up!” Together, we sang the lyrics to “Mr. Grinch.”
I don’t know why I like the song so much. Maybe it’s because it is different from so many sugary sweet Christmas songs. Maybe it’s because it’s a reminder of childhood and Dr. Seuss. And maybe it is because there is so much truth about the ugly nature of going to any length, including hurting others, to meet one’s own desires.
Whatever the reason, the “Mr. Grinch” song always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 170
For the most part, I think I’ve handled my recent accident and subsequent surgery rather well. I’ve continued to work and to tackle necessary tasks. I just haven’t been able to do much without help or without taking more time than normal. But this past weekend, I had a realization that I’m just not going to heal quickly enough to give my family the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I’d planned. And I threw myself a little pity party.
Fortunately, no one else joined in. That’s not to say no one cared, they just wouldn’t let me focus on what I can’t do when there is still so much I can do.
Their refusal to let validate my negative thoughts helped me to once again look at possibilities rather than impossibilities.
Being surrounded by people who constantly remind me of all I am capable of accomplishing always makes me smile.

Last night, my daughter asked me to watch movie with her. “It’s the original Escape to Witch Mountain” she said. “It came out in 1975.”
Since Escape to Witch Mountain was one of my favorite movies when I was a child, I was thrilled to watch it with her.
Sharing part of my childhood with my own children always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 168
There are times when all of us need to feel important. Nothing makes me feel more valued than to have my pets fight over me.
Yesterday, I came home from work exhausted and tried to catch a cat nap. My cat tried to make it official by curling up next to me. My dog, however, was jealous and did all he could to kick her
out of bed.
I never did get the nap, but I did get plenty of smiles watching them.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 167
I received a package from my parents Wednesday. The box was full of wrapped presents for the family, and one unwrapped present just for me. My mother had sent date nut rolls she had made from a recipe her mother had passed down to her, My mother was never big on baking or making sweets, so those rolls were always a treat. Getting them delivered to me at Christmas is an even greater treat.
There is nothing like the taste of a Christmas memory to make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 156
I’ve been told that when I get older, I will eventually change. Maybe that’s true.
But for now, I simply will not accept an artificial tree as our family Christmas tree. I’m fine with smaller artificial trees in the house, but THE Christmas tree must be real.
I can attribute my need for a real tree to my father, who was a forester and always ensured we had a real tree from a real forest when I was a child.
But in all honesty, I love a real tree for two reasons.
The first is our family tradition of going to the Christmas tree farm to search for the perfect tree, cut it down, carry it to be bailed and then wait for hours while my husband ensures that it is firmly secured on the Jeep.
The second is the smell of a real tree in our house. There is absolutely nothing like it, and candles or other attempts to capture that smell are jut not the same.
Every time I walk past my living room and catch the smell of this year’s Douglas Fir, I smile.
But then, a real Christmas tree always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 149
On Friday, my parents quietly celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. There was no party and no fanfare. Most of their friends and acquaintances probably didn’t even recognize the importance of the day.
But my dad did. In a blog he started only a couple of months ago, he wrote about his first date with my mom (My Parent’s First Date).
When I read it, it brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face.
But then, a love that is still going strong after fifty years will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 147
The day my daughter was big enough to move from the back to the front seat of the car was an adjustment.
Make that constant adjustments. Kendall can’t simply listen to one radio station, and she is constantly searching for the perfect song. When she finds it, she sings along at the top of her lungs. When it ends, she immediately goes through the array of stations again.
I’d find it annoying if I weren’t so impressed with her vocal skills when she sings with her favorite songs, which are generally the latest hits by Pink, Imagine Dragons, Miranda Lambert, Bruno Mars, Train, etc. That’s why I was surprised when I was driving her to dance on Tuesday night and she stopped on a station that was playing the Simple Minds song “Don’t You Forget About Me.”
She turned to me and said, “Let’s listen to The Breakfast Club song.
I grinned from ear to ear. That movie came out when I was a senior in high school, and I first saw it on my 18th birthday. The fact that my daughter “gets it” always makes me smile.
