365 Reasons to Smile – Day 166
My office is located across the street from a Catholic Church and next door to a Presbyterian Church. On my first day of work, I immediately noticed the bell chiming familiar hymns periodically throughout the day. The bells enchanted me, but like so many other things we see and hear everyday, they soon became background noise that I ignored. Until today.
Today I noticed the bells playing Christmas carols, and the sound made me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 165
When I was a child, I always loved performing the school holiday concert.
As a parent, I love watching and listening to my children perform at their school holiday concert’s. And I also love watching the other parents glow with pride.
That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 161
I love when people in tough situations make the best of their circumstances. They inspire me to do the same and remember that, no matter what, there are always reasons for hope.
Yesterday, I received an email from a woman with whom I am working on a project. Her daughter was in the Children’s Hospital of Richmond when a very special video was recorded.
Not only does that video reminds me of hope.
It also makes me smile.
I hope it makes you smile too.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 158
My daughter left her “notebook” on the desk in our home office the other day, and I picked it up to and flipped through it.
Just to clarify, this was just a notebook and not a diary. Therefore, I did not violate her privacy. The notebook is one that she uses to write down quotes.
Kendall loves quotes. She loves quotes A LOT. So much so that she constantly feels the need to share them with friends and family. When I say constantly, I mean constantly. And because the quotes are constant, I don’t always pay that much attention.
But flipping through her notebook the other day really gave me insight into the person Kendall is becoming. ‘
One of her favorite quotes was highlighted.
“That’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereals based on color rather than taste.” John Green.
Reading that quote makes me smile. Knowing that my daughter is not a superficial person makes me smile even more.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 155
The day my son was born, my husband turned to me and said, “this is the best day ever.”
In all honesty, at the time, I wasn’t sure I believed him. Being a parent was never on my list of things I had to accomplish in my life.
It should have been.
Last night, I did nothing but enjoy time with my two children. We decorated the Christmas tree. I made one of their favorite meals (chicken and dumplings). And we watched a silly movie together.
There was nothing particularly exciting or interesting about the evening.
But there was a great deal that was memorable and meaningful.
That’s because the most important moments in life or not necessarily those that are the most exciting but the ones that connect us with people who matter.
My kids matter.
They also make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 142
I was on the phone with my children’s piano teacher, Kinsey, the other day, and she said my daughter no longer thinks that she’s cool. (When Kendall started piano lessons, Kinsey was engaged, now she is married with a nearly four year-old daughter.)
“That’s o.k.,” said Kinsey. “I understand. It’s her turn to be cool. My daughter wants to be just like her. She wants to wear her hair like Kendall and buy boots like Kendall’s.”
Kendall enjoys watching over and caring for younger girls, but until recently, I never realized that they might think that she is “cool.” Then yesterday in church, I watched her interact with a 6 year-old girl, and I realized how the little girl was looking up to my daughter.
The fact that my daughter can be a role model for others will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 139
I absolutely love driving my children to school. Generally, that involves my daughter and her BFF, who are both in seventh grade, sitting in the back seat while my son, who is a sophomore in high school, sits in the front seat.
To be honest, they simply entertain me.
The girls babble on, and my son grunts and groans at them as he drinks his morning coffee.
The kids simply live on different planets.
This couldn’t have been more evident than the other day when one of the girls said something I don’t even remember, other than the phrase included the “I am the fox.”
As a Beatles fan, my immediate response was “I am the Walrus.”
The girls didn’t understand my random comment and giggled uncontrollably in the back seat, but my son, in his usual deadpan voice, said “goo goo goo joob.”
This is the same son who stole my black and white framed photo of the Beatles to decorate his own walls.
Having something in common with my 15-year old son always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 134
I had a repeat customer while working in the concession stand during the last home football game of the season.
He was handsome and loaded with cash. I observed the handsome part. He told me about the being loaded with cash part.
He was also too young to drive or go to PG 13 movies without an adult.
But he had $55.00 in his pocket, and he was doing his best to spend it.
He bought pizza during one visit to the concession stand and a chicken sandwich during another. Later, he bought hot chocolate and candy. After he paid each time, he looked at the jar with only a few dollars and coins that said “music booster donations welcome.” Then, he’d throw his change in the jar and grin.
“I got my money for getting good grades,” he said in an off-hand way. “I did good. Now I’m going to do even better.”
His generosity made me grin. But then, generosity always makes me smile.

The Empty Box
The boxes were big – really really big/ And there was one for my brother and one for me. They were among the first gifts to appear under our Christmas tree, and my brother and I couldn’t have been more excited.
We were ten and twelve years old that year – old enough to know that our parents were practical and extremely unlikely to splurge on anything expensive AND impractical. But we were ten and twelve years old that year – young enough to be hopeful and confident that the boxes were too big to actually hold anything practical.
We were wrong.
On Christmas morning, we both tore into the large boxes, which simply revealed what we had known in our hearts all along: our parents were extremely practical.
Inside each large box was a puffy winter coat. To us, the boxes might as well have held nothing at all. My brother and I were both devastated. Our mom had actually wrapped winter coats in beautiful packages with elaborate bows as though the gifts were incredibly special.
As an adult, I can appreciate the presents and that my parents wanted to ensure our warmth. But as a child, I felt like I had been fooled. Sometimes I feel like I’m still being fooled or, just as often, I’m fooling myself.
I still jump to conclusions based on the appearance of a box without knowing what’s inside. For example, I was recently discussing the backpack program, in which food is sent home with students who may not have enough to eat over a weekend. For some reason, the discussion turned to a specific neighborhood, and I said, “Why waste time in that neighborhood, shouldn’t they should focus on neighborhoods where children are really hungry?”
The neighborhood in question has large homes with spacious, well-manicured lawns.
“Because there are hungry children in some of those homes,” I was told. When I started to argue, I was put in my place. “Some families bought those houses in hopes that the value would grow. At the time, they didn’t have enough money to furnish them. Now, their houses are worth considerably less than they owe, and they are struggling just to make the bare minimum payment. They have no furniture and often can’t afford food. There are hungry children in side those big, empty houses.”
And I realized those houses are like pretty boxes. We think we know what is inside, but we are often wrong.
This week is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, and I hope everyone will take some time to think about boxes: empty ones and ones we can fill up with food for hungry families. This year, our help is needed more than ever. SNAP (formerly food stamp) benefits have been cut, and nonprofit organizations are receiving less support from the government than in previous years. That means our hungry and homeless are depending on community members.
Let’s fill up those empty boxes.
365 Reasons to Smile – Day 132
My husband and I were recently talking about another couple that leads a much more exciting life than ours. They are constantly going to concerts and on great vacations.
“What,” my husband asked, “did we do wrong?”
“Nothing,” I replied. “We just had kids, and they take up most of our free time and all of our money. But would you trade that for any other life?”
My husband didn’t even have to think about it.
“No,” he said. “Absolutely not.”
Every time I think about his response, I will always smile.
