365 Reasons To Smile- Day 206

I adore walking my German Shepherd, Rodney. But since I shattered my wrist, I’m prohibited from walking him when our streets get icy and snow covered. Because I shattered my wrist while walking Rodney on icy and snowy streets, I understand why my husband insists he walk the dog during bad weather.

That doesn’t mean I’m happy about the situation, particularly since I miss his almost daily romps with his best friend  Jovi.

Last week, while I was at work, my husband sent me a link to a video of Rodney and Jovi playing in the snow.

That video will always make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 205

To say the weather has been rather cold lately would be similar to saying fine chocolate is simply good. Additional descriptive words are required to help others understand. At least, words used to be required.thermometer

Now. I sometimes think advances in technology are taking our command of language back decades, if not centuries.  Take for example, how many people share a photo of their vehicle’s dashboard thermometer to let everyone know what extreme temperatures they are enduring.

Personally, I still like colorful phrases like “It’s so cold your shadow will freeze to the sidewalk” or “It’s so cold my beard shattered when I smiled.”

But then, descriptive phrases, no matter how old and overused, always make me smile

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 204

Arsenic_And_Old_Lace_PosterI was working very hard to convince my daughter to watch a classic movie.

She’d have none of it.

“You can’t tell anyone apart. They all have the same haircut and wear suits. The guys that is,” she said.

I paid no attention to my daughter’s complaints and told her we were going to watch Arsenic and Old Lace.

Initially, she acted disinterested. Then she giggled occasionally. Toward the end, she was laughing out loud and commenting.

Classic movies always make me smile.

Watching my children enjoy them makes me smile even more.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 203

I can’t complain about my life. I have a great deal to celebrate and even more for which to be thankful. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t faced tough days and difficult times. There have been times when I’ve spent days in tears and weeks worrying whether life will get any better. baddaysLogically, I knew things would get better. But emotionally, I sometimes felt as though they wouldn’t.

They always did, of course, and I came out of the situations stronger and wiser.

Which is why, when someone posted a quote on Facebook the other day, I completely appreciated it.

It simply made me smile.

Day 203: Reminders of Resiliency

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 202

I love children’s books. I loved children’s books when I was a child. I loved children’s books when my children were young. And stefsponytailnow that my children are older, I love giving children’s books to new parents.

Since I haven’t been in the market for new children’s books for about a decade, I rely on the books I  loved reading to my children, especially the ones that made us giggle.

Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch was one of those books. If you’ve never read it, the story centers around Stephanie, who likes to be unique. But every time she attempts to change her ponytail, her peers first make fun of her then copy her. By the end of the book, Stephanie remains true to herself and takes control of the situation.

It’s one of those books that encourages children to think for themselves, and that always makes me smile

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 201

helpOver the weekend, I received an email from someone whose name I didn’t even recognize. After reading the message, I realized that the sender had gotten married and changed her name.

Obviously, I’m not at all close to this individual, but we had worked on a couple of projects together. That’s why she was contacting me. She was asking me to be a reference on a job she was seeking.

I must admit, I was surprised that she even asked me to be a reference. But I also admit that I was flattered.

But then, being asked to help someone else is always flattering. It also always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 200

They say women often marry men similar to their fathers. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true for me, but my husband and my dad do have some  similar traits.

My dad, for example, has always  been interested in the weather and used technology to  track it. My husband was only interested in the weather with regards to how it affected his commute until he figured out he could use technology to share his misery.

gilescarA couple of weeks ago, he drove home in an ice storm. By the time he parked his car in our garage, it was caked in ice. He tweeted his photo to the Capital Weather Gang, which retweeted his photo. An AccuWeather employee then asked permission to post the photo on the weather service’s website.

That got my husband hooked.

When he got home from work yesterday morning, he was taking photos and tweeting them before the snow had even begun to accumulate.early snow

His new obsession simply makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 199

Like many of my peers, I can recite most  of the lines from the Schoolhouse Rock! series about the parts of speech and American government. But Schoolhouse Rock! spots aren’t the first educational “commercials” I remember.

I have a distinct memory of standing in our small living room in front of our black and white television while I waited for my mom to take me to Head Start. Since we never watched much television in our house, the stolen moments in front of the TV were like magic. I was particularly fascinated by short programs that, as far as I could tell, had nothing to do with the scheduled television shows. But the spots had a theme song that caught my attention and was easy to remember.

I still remember the words to “The Most Important Person,” and even though some might claim such a pronouncement was encouraging children to be self-centered, I’m pretty sure the purpose was to promote self-esteem.

The content seems a bit strange in the year 2014, but that’s one of the reasons those spots still make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 198

Martin-Luther-KingNo one ever said that doing the right thing is easy nor is it always the popular thing.

But people who do the right thing despite the risks are always to be commended.

I am extremely fortunate to live a life surrounded by such people.mlk1

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 197

duct tape roseMy nerves were frayed. I was trying to help my daughter with a school project, but she was in one of her adolescent moods. know that mood well. I was a master of it myself more than thirty years ago. Because of that, I should have been more understanding. Instead, I was simply frustrated.

My daughter said she wanted my help but then made snotty remarks when I made suggestions. I couldn’t take it and told her that I wouldn’t help her if she was going to be rude.

She stormed off in one direction, and I went in another. Later, after we had both calmed down, we started working on the project again. We hadn’t done much when she told me she needed to take a break to make something.

I sighed. I knew this was just another procrastination tactic. I also knew that she, not I, was responsible for completing the project.

I underestimated her.

She returned a few minutes later with a rose she had made from duct tape. She handed it to me then returned to work on the project.

I held the rose and smiled.
