365 Reasons to Smile – Day 101
This weekend, my daughter had a couple of her friends for a sleep over while my son was sleeping at a friend’s house. But even though my son was not actually at home, he was definitely present during the sleep over at my house.
Upon my son’s recommendation, the girls decided to watch “the worst movie ever,” which, according to Shepherd, is Troll 2. After some debate about the PG-13 rating, the girls were allowed to watch the movie. I enjoyed the giggles and laughter from another room. After watching the movie, my daughter declared, “That really is the worst movie ever. It was so bad, it was good.”
The next day, when I picked my son up at his friend’s, I told him the girls had watched Troll 2. My son doesn’t smile much, but when he does it’s a broad, infectious grin. He gave me that grin and laughed. “That is the worst movie ever. I can’t believe they watched it. I think I told them to do that.” I told him that was why they’d watched it.
Keeping the peace in my house is often be difficult. My children have very different personalities and very different tastes. Except for politics, they rarely agree on anything. My daughter loves pork chops and mashed potatoes. My son hates them. My son loves jalapeno peppers and Buffalo Wings. My daughter hates them.
But apparently they agree that Troll 2 is the worst movie ever.
My children agreeing on anything always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 100
Everyone thinks that the first students to attend a new high school are very lucky. And in many ways, they are. But in some ways, they aren’t.
Take, for example, my son’s new marching band. Last year, during his freshman band experience at an established high school, he suffered through a grueling band camp and long rehearsals. In return, his band traveled all over the state, and sometimes even out-of-state, for competitions.
This year, there are no seniors at his brand new high school, so the band is already much smaller. And the new school wasn’t even available for rehearsals, so the band had to use the middle school. Band camp was shortened as a result of all faculty being required to take courses about the technology at the brand new school, Worst of all, the band doesn’t have a budget for traveling to competitions. Raising that money is the responsibility of the boosters, which didn’t even exist until a couple of months ago.
The band does have brand new uniforms, and it does get to play home games on an amazing new football field. In fact, this weekend’s band competition, sponsored by another high school, was moved to their field after several days of rain.
The small band did its job, and the parents were some of the loudest fans in the stands.
The band won its division.
As my son noted, his band is the only one in the division, but at least it got first place.
Looking on the bright side always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 99
Yesterday, I did something I’ve never done as an adult.
I entered a race. I can’t say I really competed, but I completed. And in doing so, I spent some time with friends and some time challenging myself.
I’ve always been hesitant to enter races, mostly because I’m generally an incredibly competitive person, and I hate to do something if I know I’m not going to excel.
But seeing that same tendency in my daughter, I’ve decided to take baby steps toward challenging myself to try something new with no expectations other than to enjoy myself.
And guess what?
I did it.
I may even enter another race. Or maybe I’ll try something else, like singing in public. Well, maybe I won’t go that far. But at least I’m learning that doing things for fun rather than striving for perfection really can make me smile.

A Portrait of Jesus
This past week, while much of the news focused on Congress, the debt ceiling and the federal shutdown, another story caught my attention.

A school district in Jackson, Ohio agreed to take down a portrait of Jesus that had been hanging in a school since 1947. The district is not removing the portrait because, after 66 years, it realized that the portrait might be a violation of separation of church and state. It’s removing it for financial reasons.
In February, the ACLU of Ohio and the Freedom From Religion Foundation sued the Jackson City School District for “endorsing one religion improperly.” The school attempted to argue that the portrait was part of a “limited public forum” but eventually agreed in court to remove it to avoid “risking taxpayer money.”
The actual story wasn’t what caught my attention. I’ve read about plenty of similar stories over the past couple of decades. What caught my attention was someone’s reaction to it.
“This is why are country is in trouble,” the person wrote. “We are turning our backs on Christianity.”
I couldn’t have agreed with that statement more. I just agreed for entirely different reasons.
I don’t believe many of our leaders or citizens are acting in a way that Jesus wanted.
From what I know about Jesus, he didn’t care about himself. He cared about everyone else. EVERYONE else – regardless of socioeconomic status, criminal status or religion. He simply cared about people and did all he could to help them while trying to teach all of us to do the same.
I can’t imagine the Jesus that I know would care whether or not his portrait was on a wall in a school. My guess is that he probably wouldn’t want it there. He didn’t want his image (or what a lot of people consider his image) to be worshiped.
The type of worship he wanted was for people to understand his words and behaviors and to practice them every day.
There are those who would argue that the portrait of Jesus in a school was just a reminder for students to listen to his words and to do their best to practice his behaviors. If that is what they believe, I applaud them. But if they are trying to promote Christianity as a religion in which all people should believe, then I do have an issue with that.
I don’t think whether or not someone is a Christian defines whether they are good or bad or worthy or unworthy. But I do believe that Christianity means that, instead of judging others, we love and care for them.
And that’s why I agree with the person who said we are turning our backs on Christianity. My agreement has nothing to do with the label and everything to do with the behavior.
Which is exactly the message Jesus was trying to teach us: it’s all about how we treat others.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 94
Sometimes changes happen so slowly that we don’t even notice them occurring. At others times, they happen so rapidly we don’t have time to prepare.

But change does happen. People come and go in our lives. Circumstances don’t stay the same. And the landscape evolves.
Depending on the situation, sometimes I embrace change and sometimes I fight it.
But the changes that occur during autumn serve as a reminder that no moment is ever the same again. As I ride my bike, I notice the tiny changes that occur over night in the trees and the fields. Sometimes, I am awed at how quickly the changes occur and sometimes I am saddened by how quickly the bright colors fade.

But I always reminded how accepting life’s inevitable change is easier than fighting it.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 93
A few weeks ago, my mom sent me an email with a link to her cousin’s obituary and told me to read the comments. Since I’d only met the man a couple of times, I didn’t immediately pay much attention. But, as I was cleaning up old emails, I decided to take a look.
I’m glad I did.
Apparently, Mom’s cousin Clark died while preparing to attend the visitation for his wife, who had just passed away. According to his son, he had his own idea about what the visitation meant and decided to go see his wife in heaven rather than at the funeral home. Others commented that no one should be surprised. The two had been married for 55 years, were joined at the hip and helped define each other.
I’m generally cynical about the concept of soul mates and destiny, but their story gives me pause. In a world in which celebrity break-ups make headlines, an article in a small town newspaper (Clark and Shirley: A Love Story) captures what is truly important in life.
And that will always make me smile.

I’m absolutely in love with the camera on my phone. I never thought I could love technology so much, but having access to a camera at all times has allowed me to capture moments that I never would have otherwise.
Whether the photos are of my children, my pets, nature or historic events, they always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 91
I pretty much like everything about fall with the exception of the stink bugs and squirrels.
I’ll always dislike stink bugs, but I don’t always dislike squirrels. I just have an issue with them in the fall because they go from being cute critters to being dangerous rodents.
Their transformation is directly related to walnuts falling from the trees. The more walnuts that fall, the more dangerous the squirrels become.
They are like addicts going after the next fix, and they’ll risk almost anything to get it. Sometimes that means running almost directly under my German Shepherd’s nose while he’s on a leash. The squirrels are never at much risk of being hurt by my dog when he lunges, but I am. There have been a couple of times when I feared having my shoulder torn out of its socket.
But the squirrels’ courage around my dog is nothing compared to their courage on roads. When I’m behind the wheel of a car, I generally don’t notice the squirrels that stalk the roads just waiting for nuts to fall. But when I’m on my bicycle, I notice. And when a nut does fall, there isn’t just a mad dash to get it. There’s a competition.
The squirrels certainly don’t care if there is someone on a bike hurtling down a hill right at them. They run in front of the bicycle anyway.
Which is why I’m glad that I just had my bike serviced and the brakes work.
And I have proof that they work well. They work really, really well – even under dire circumstances.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 90
The year my friend Michele’s mother died, I remember discussing good years and bad years.
The essence of our conversation was that we categorize the most memorable events of our lives by the year they occurred. Because of that, we automatically label certain years as good or bad.
Based on that, the year 2013 has been a bad year. People I care about are hurting.
Some are dealing with addiction in their family.
Some are dealing with divorce.
Some are dealing with employment issues.
And some are dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. Again.
Even worse, all of these individuals have incredible compassion for others. They are selfless and generous and, most importantly, they are positive. They talk about moving on and about miracles.
Most of all, they don’t define life through their own experiences but rather through the experiences of those they’ve touched.
Some day when I’m more removed from immediate crises, I will reflect back on the year 2013. Even though I’ve experienced more sorrow than celebration, I don’t know that I could ever categorize this as a bad year.
I will simply categorize it as a year that my friends became my heroes.
And that will always make me smile.
