365 Reasons To Smile- Day 229

Neither of my children have ever expressed much concern about “fitting in.” At the same time, they are both quick to express that they are unique or odd.

I don’t know if that’s more a reflection of their generation or of their DNA.

Whatever the reason, I generally don’t expect them to behave in stereotypical ways. So, when they do, I always take note.

A few nights ago, my son was scrounging in the refrigerator for food when I told him dinner would be ready in an hour.

His response was full of exasperation. “Exactly.” He said. “An hour.”

He sounded as though he was being asked to fast for 40 days and nights.

“My son, the bottomless pit,” I thought.  “But I guess that’s what 15 year-old boys are supposed to be.”

And that reality, while hard on my bank account, made me smile anyway.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 228

I don’t ever remember a time when I didn’t dream about what I could accomplish.

Even as I start closing in on 50, I still dream about what I can be when I grow up.

Having a goal and a strategy for achieving it always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 227

oopsMy daughter is an avid reader. That means she learns more from books than she does from television or the movies or sometimes, I’m afraid, even from her parents. That’s never more obvious than when she reads a new word then mispronounces it horribly.

The other day, she kept referring to “megastrates” pronouncing the word similar to magazines.

I had to listen to her butcher the word several times before I realized she was saying magistrates.

I felt almost guilty correcting her, but I also felt that it was my parental duty.

I also felt a bit guilty for secretly being amused by her mispronunciations.

They almost always make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 226

rod in snowMy German Shepherd Rodney loves the snow, but even he has had a bit much of bad weather this winter. This was obvious during a recent ice storm when he went out for his daily constitutional, squatted and got a look of sheer desperation as his long legs slid away from his body in different directions. He reminded me of Bambi on ice.

If that weren’t humiliating enough, he recently had to contend with a nearly two feet of snow in the backyard. Normally, that’s where he relieves himself between walks. But the amount of snow which fell last week prohibited him from lifting his leg.

The look on his face as he tried to make due was absolutely doleful.

The look on my face was one of absolute amusement.

I couldn’t help but smile,

Simple Minded

rumiI used to believe that as we matured, we grew out of our need for simple story lines. The fairy tales we enjoyed as children generally featured characters who were all good or all bad.

As we got older and our brains matured from concrete to abstract thinking, we realized that people and situations are complicated and that life comes at us in a broad spectrum of colors – not just black and white.

That was the paradigm in which I used to believe.

Maybe that’s because I’ve surrounded myself with individuals who have complicated views of the world and I have yet to meet anyone who is even close to perfect. Maybe that’s because my own life and belief systems are complicated. Or maybe it’s because I’m a social worker, which means I see the best and worst in people almost every single day.

For whatever reason, I sometimes forget there are too many people who have unrealistically simple views of the world.

And then life hands me a great big dose of a reality and I am left dumbstruck at how people can justify being judgmental by painting human behavior with broad brushes of right and wrong, good or bad and deserving and undeserving,

Even worse are the people who think they have THE answer for eliminating such complicated issues as poverty and violence.

Just this past week, a colleague asked an individual who works at an organization that serves low-income families what these families need to help them improve their situation. Instead of thoughtful dialogue, the individual began to rant about all the families that “abuse the system.”

Then he suggested that we stop rewarding women for getting pregnant so they can access to benefits.

Call me naïve, but I am highly doubtful that most baby-making situations are the direct result of a female thinking she will be financially secure if she has a baby.

With that said, I’m equally sure that there are women who aren’t concerned about getting pregnant because someone, be it the system or a grandparent or perhaps the father, will step up to help with the situation.

There are women who get pregnant because they don’t think about consequences and there are those who are desperate for love and attention. And there are low-income women who get pregnant because, shocking as it may be, they want to have a family.

And not every mother was single or lacked income when she got pregnant. People lose their jobs, and finding child care is difficult for those who do shift work. People face financial problems because of mental or physical illness every day. Relationships fall apart. Some women are brave enough to leave an abusive relationship only to face financial hardships.

Do you see what I mean about being complicated?

But people who prefer simplistic answers don’t want to consider complicated. They want to devalue the worth of single mothers or low-income families who experience generational poverty.

But my complicated (or mature?) mind can’t understand that way of thinking. Instead, I believe that we are all imperfect humans who have a relatively short time on earth. Some of us are born into better circumstances than others. Some of us had parents who nurtured us and helped our brains develop appropriately. Some of us had role models and grew up in homes where chaos was unusual and unacceptable.

In other words, some of us were just plain lucky, and last I checked, lucky and worthy are two entirely different concepts.

Life is not fair, and instead of wasting precious time and energy trying to balance the scales of fairness (something even my children know will never happen), we should spend our time and energy cheering on and supporting our fellow humans.

That doesn’t mean we should accept that people live poverty or that they have no responsibility for trying to improve their situation – they do. But that does mean that we should provide opportunities to help them improve, and, more importantly, we shouldn’t judge.

Often, that doesn’t involve changing circumstances or rules for other people. That involves changing ourselves.

That’s not easy. In fact, it’s rather… complicated.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 225

Scott HamiltonLast week, figure skater Scott Hamilton celebrated the 30-year anniversary of winning his gold medal in Sarajevo. I clearly remember watching that performance with my mother and her excitement for “Scotty.”

That excitement was only equaled when we actually got to see him skate live.

But even that didn’t match her enthusiasm when Scott Hamilton skated to the edge of the rink and shook our hands following his performance.

At the time, I was convinced my mom would never wash her hand again.

Now, even though I know she has actually washed her hands thousands of times since, that memory always makes me smile.

My current office is in a corner, which means I have TWO windows.

That really, really, really makes me smile.IMG_2485

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 223

Kendall cookingWatching our children mature can be bittersweet. They are no longer precious little toddlers nor cute children. Instead they are becoming  self reliant individuals and independent thinkers. That means they no longer believe their parents are smart or have a clue about anything relevant.

On the flip side, they can make significant contributions to the family. My daughter cooks and my son shovels the driveway.

And that really makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 222

fixatorThis is a very self-absorbed post. I couldn’t stop smiling yesterday, but my happiness had no relevance to anyone but me.

For almost  nine weeks, I’ve had an external fixator screwed into my wrist and arm as a result of a shattered wrist and a broken arm.

Yesterday, that external fixator came out.

That made me smile.

Then my doctor cleaned the parts, put them in a bag and handed them to me.

That made me smile even more. I wasn’t smiling because I had permanent possession of the  parts.

I was smiling because being handed the device that had constrained me for so many weeks was, well, just plain strange.

But it was also a reminder of everything I’ve overcome.

And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 221

st. teresaI am a very blessed person.

I was raised by two parents who took their job as parents seriously. I have two children who, while far from perfect, are intelligent, talented and true to themselves. I have a job where I feel valued and I have people in my life and who support me.

Despite that, feelings of self doubt sometimes creep into my brain. That’s why I always keep a framed copy of St. Teresa’s prayer nearby.

It always serves as a reminder that my life has a purpose, even when I don’t see it.

And that always makes me smile.
