365 Reasons to Smile – Day 96

red and white candyMy grandfather was obsessive compulsive, which served him well in his career as an electrical engineer.  His behavior wasn’t as endearing when it came to relationships with his family. To say he was structured and methodical would be like saying that the Kardashians enjoy attention.

My grandfather could only function under a rigid sense of rules and routine. I remember walking with him in his neighborhood and trying to cross the street “the wrong way.” Literally, he told me that I shouldn’t cross the street going straight and then turn to my right. I was supposed to turn to my right, cross the street then turn left.

Because of his adherence to schedules, he and my grandmother always visited us twice a year. They would drive from their home in Michigan to our house in Oregon, stay for an extended period of time and then drive home.

During those visits, my grandmother always cleaned and organized my dresser drawers.  And the she would leave a few of her trademark red and white peppermint candies in my underwear drawer. She’d leave more on the day she and my grandfather left for their return trip to Michigan.

Looking back, I really don’t know why she chose my underwear drawer. I do know that every time I have a red and white peppermint candy, I always think of my grandparents and their commitment to seeing their grandkids.

And that always makes me smile.
