365 Reasons to Smile – Day 136
I believe in ghosts.
They show up and haunt us at the most unexpected times. Just the other day, one appeared when I was cleaning out a desk drawer.
The desk belonged to my grandfather, who was as meticulous as I am random. For example, he kept a ledger of every penny he spent from the day he was married until he began to develop Alzheimer’s.
I inherited my grandfather’s desk after he passed away. I cleaned it out when I got it, then, for a while, my son used it. When it was moved to the guest room, it was cleaned again. Recently I decided to use it for the same purpose my grandfather did: to conduct the family business.
That’s when, while once again cleaning the drawers, I found the drawing of a bird with my grandfather’s careful and easily identifiable handwriting.
I don’t know the origins of the drawing or why my grandfather was interested in a bird’s wingspan.
I do know that card was like receiving a postcard from heaven.
And that always makes me smile.

I’m not one of those people who is constantly posting quotes on Facebook. I’m not into overkill. Instead, I’m into posting comments and photos and articles that represent who I am and what I think.
But every once in a while, someone posts a quote that completely speaks to me, and I find myself smiling without hesitation.
Today was one of those days.
The quote I saw could be my mantra.
Finding a personal motto always makes me smile.

When I was in sixth grade, I didn’t have much fashion sense.
Make that, I didn’t have any fashion sense. I was generally the last girl to figure out when something was in style, and by then, it was already going out of style.
But even I knew that rainbow suspenders with badges were all the rage, and they were popular for one reason: Mork wore them on Mork and Mindy.
To be honest, I remember thinking the television show was rather stupid, but because everyone else was watching it, I watched it too.
My feelings for the show have changed. Recently, I heard the theme song, and a wave a nostalgia washed over me.
That kind of nostalgia always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 129
When I was in elementary school, I read the book The Bears’ House by Marilyn Sachs over and over again. I would turn it in on library day only to check it out again a couple of weeks later.
The story about Fran wasn’t inspiring. She was smelly and unpopular and didn’t have much hope or support. Her efforts to escape her family life was depressing. But the book opened my eyes to a world completely different from my own.
I had a parents who did what society expected parents to do. Fran’s father had left, and her mother was mentally ill.
I never doubted my future was bright, and Fran’s only hope was in an imaginary world.
Yet, some part of me understood and cheered for Fran. And some part of me wanted to step in and make her life better.
Decades later, I’m a licensed social worker and, next week, I’m starting a job that will affect families who, like Fran’s, are facing numerous challenges. As a freshman in college, I never would have chosen such a career path. I thought I was destined for much greater things.
But as a third grader, I think I knew what direction my life would eventually take. And I also think I knew that path would be all about doing great things.
That always makes me smile.

My Uncle Martin turned 102 this year. He was my grandmother’s youngest sibling, and he is the last one still living.

He was 94 before my mother (his niece) and I learned that he had been among the American troops to storm the beaches of Normandy in June 1944.
We were at my grandmother’s memorial service when Uncle Martin mentioned his role in history as casually as is he were telling us what he’d had for breakfast.
I don’t remember why he mentioned it, but I do remember he wasn’t expecting gratitude or accolades and he certainly downplayed his role. “I wasn’t among the first to arrive,” he said when pressed.
And that’s about all he said about his role in a defining moment in history. He saw himself as a bit player, and I saw him not only as a hero, but as my own personal link with history. To me, he was a rock star.
He also put the importance of our veterans in context.
I may not like war, but I like oppression even less. And without our veterans, individuals who put their lives on the line for people they will never even know, my view of oppression would be from the inside out rather than the outside in.
Which is why, on Veterans Day, I have to give a shout out to my Uncle Martin and to all the other veterans who protect my right to write.
They always make me smile.

I don’t remember precisely when it started happening, but sometime in the early 1990’s people began saying my father looked like Wilford Brimley.
It happened so much, I started getting annoyed, especially since I could never see the resemblance.
But then one spring day, my husband and I were stuck in the Seattle airport when our flight was cancelled due to mechanical problems. I was wandering aimlessly waiting for another flight when I saw my dad walk by.
I shook my husband’s arm to get his attention. “Some guy who looks just like my dad walked by.”
Giles looked at me with a bemused expression.
“That guy was Wilford Brimley,” he said.
In disbelief, I said , “No it wasn’t. It was just some guy who looked like my dad.”
“No,” Giles said firmly. “That was Wilford Brimley.”
Since I had nothing else to do, I decided to prove my husband wrong, and turned to follow the man.
It turned out, he was Wilford Brimley, and he was seated in a gate for Alaska Airlines.
I walked by him about ten times before he noticed his stalker. At that point, I decided to do the only thing I could.
No, I didn’t introduce myself as his doppelgänger’s daughter.
I called my dad from a nearby pay phone to tell him that I was looking right at Wilford Brimley and that he indeed, looked like my father.
Dad was unimpressed, but I wasn’t.
To this day, that moment always makes me smile.

When I was in college, I remember completing a questionnaire for someone’s class project. Supposedly, the university was going to follow up with respondents in fifteen years to determine whether we had accomplished what we’d hoped. Since I moved several times after college, and my parents moved a couple of times, I’ll never know if anyone ever tried to contact me.
But since I specifically remember what I predicted about my future, I know I didn’t accomplish what I expected.
And I’m really glad I didn’t.
My life and my career have been unpredictable, and therefore much richer, than I had ever hoped.
And that always makes me smile.

Daylight Savings Time ended at 1:59 AM on Sunday, November 3, 2013.
Personally, I think the whole changing clocks forward or backward is pointless, but in order to abide by societal norms, I am forced to comply with the nonsense.
The recent time change has definitely put a cramp in my style, especially my exercise style.
I’m not a big believer in riding my bike in the dark, so I’ve been trying to accommodate.
Making accommodations is getting harder every day.
Yesterday, I made the mistake of taking time to talk to a neighbor and play with her dog.
As a result, I competed with the sunset. I wanted to get home before it went over the horizon.
The sunset won. Sort of.
Because I actually let it take the lead when I stopped to capture pictures of the November Sky.
I may have arrived home after the sun did, but the risk was well worth it.
The constantly changing sky always makes me smile.

Election day on Tuesday had more significance than a much appreciated end to constant commercials about the Virginia Governor’s race.
My brother was on the ballot for a seat on his local board of education. An email from my mother yesterday confirmed that he;d won, but it confirmed something else as well.
We can’t deny our genes.
More than 30 years ago, my mother won her own seat on the local board of education.
There’s something to be said for parents who live a life that inspires their children.
That always makes me smile.

I recently heard that NBC has cast Carrie Underwood to be Maria in a live performance of The Sound of Music in December.
I don’t get it. (I really don’t have an opinion about the choice of Carrie Underwood, I just don’t understand why NBC is trying to remake such a classic movie.)
Movies are classics for a reason. It’s not just the story or the actors or the dialogue or even the music. It’s that magical chemistry of all the elements coming together perfectly.
The Sound of Music is one of those movies. I can’t imagine that anyone can recreate that absolutely perfect moment when Christopher Plummer tells Julie Andrews “You can’t marry someone when you’re in love with someone else, can you?”
I’ve probably seen that scene 100 times, and it always makes me smile.
