365 Reasons to Smile – Day 166

Church-bellsMy office is located across the street from a Catholic Church and next door to a Presbyterian Church.  On my first day of work, I immediately noticed the bell chiming familiar hymns periodically throughout the day. The bells enchanted me, but like so many other things we see and hear everyday, they soon became background noise that I ignored. Until today.

Today I noticed the bells playing Christmas carols,  and the sound made me smile.

holiday concertWhen I was a child, I always loved performing the school holiday concert.

As a parent, I love watching and listening to my children perform at their school holiday concert’s. And I also love watching the other parents glow with pride.

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 164

stone of graceOf all the challenges I’ve faced during the past few days, one of the toughest has been doing everything with one hand…and my left hand at that. Typing is especially difficult. I was texting a friend the words
“I apologize,”  and I obviously hit some wrong keys.  My phone auto corrected to “I accept grace.”

I’ve never seen such an absolutely perfect auto correct,  and it made me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile Day 163

My husband isn’t just a dad or a father.  He is a parent.  That means he has always taken on significant responsibility. He’s even taken on costume fittings for dance. But the one thing he’s never taken responsibility for annual science and social studies projects. I’ve always sucked it up and taken full responsibilty for the last minute projects…until yesterday.  My son’s science project was due today but I had surgery yesterday morning.  That left my husband in charge, and it left me smiling.

Letting go of things I can’t control always makes me smile.

Day 163:  Letting go of things beyond our control

365 Reasons to Smile Day 162

I am writing this from my hospital bed in a great pain.  While walking my dog, I went down and broke both bones in my wrist in  multiple places.  The pain has been excruciating and I am scheduled for surgery.

There may not appear to be much to smile about in this story, but there is.

I am just unable to type much right now, so the story will have to wait.  But that is a reason to smile.

At least it would me.

Anticipating a good story always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 161

I love when people in tough situations make the best of their circumstances. They inspire me to do the same and remember that, no matter what, there are always reasons for hope.

Yesterday, I received an email from a woman with whom I am working on a project. Her daughter was in the Children’s Hospital of Richmond when a very special video was recorded.

Not only does that video reminds me of hope.

It also makes me smile.

I hope it makes you smile too.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 160

Oops Word on Billboard Public Mistake EmbarrassmentWe are quickly approaching the longest day of the year, but I’ve been experiencing the short days for a while now. I get up and walk the dog in the dark, and I get home and walk the dog in the dark.

I’m glad that my new job allows me to be out and about in the sunshine and that my new office  is a corner office with two windows. Sunshine is my friend, but walks in the dark with my dog Rodney are a constant source of amusement.

Apparently, Rodney’s eyesight is as bad as mine,  but he doesn’t have the advantage of corrective lenses.  As a result, he thinks every clump of snow or garbage can is an animal or  monster from which he has to protect me..

He’ll drop his head, stare at the enemy than growl a bit. When we get closer, he’ll realize the inanimate object is nothing to fear and he’ll act like he’s looking at something in the distance.

His behavior always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 159

photo (11) - CopyThe local post office delivered the best smile to me yesterday.

It arrived in a green envelope, and the contents were completely unexpected.

It simply contained a worn advertisement for a massager and the note “Not lost. One more reason to smile before the year is done. Love Pam.”

The note and advertisement referred to my Reason to Smile Day 152:  Memorable Road Trips.

I don’t know what made me smile more: the fact that Pam read my blog or the fact that she still had the massager ad.

Either way, her message in the mail will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 158

My daughter left her “notebook” on the desk in our home office the other day, and I picked it up to and flipped through it.That-always-seemed-so-ridiculous

Just to clarify, this was just a notebook and not a diary.  Therefore, I did not violate her privacy. The notebook is one that she uses to write down quotes.

Kendall loves quotes. She loves quotes A LOT. So much so that she constantly feels the need to share them with friends and family. When I say constantly, I mean constantly. And because the quotes are constant, I don’t always pay that much attention.

But flipping through her notebook the other day really gave me insight into the person Kendall is becoming. ‘

One of her favorite quotes was highlighted.

“That’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereals based on color rather than taste.” John Green.

Reading that quote makes me smile. Knowing that my daughter is not a superficial person makes me smile even more.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 157

frost on carWinter has definitely arrived, and with it school closings and warnings about hazardous road conditions.

Among those warnings are the reminders that driving with snow or ice on a car could result in a ticket.

My husband and I are fortunate. We have a two-car garage that has room for two vehicles. That means we don’t have to budget time to scrape frost, ice and snow off our cars on winter mornings.

Of course, there are times we have to budget time to shovel the driveway, but that’s something else entirely.

Because on most winter mornings, I’m thrilled to jump in the Jeep and just go.

Being able to do that always  makes me smile.
