365 Reasons To Smile- Day 216
My office sits next to a church parking lot that is generally empty. In fact, I see more people using it as a shortcut between their office and their parking spot than I see cars there. One such gentleman in a tie and jacket was crossing the empty parking lot as I was leaving work the other day.
I wasn’t paying much attention to him, but I must have given him what my husband calls “the look.” Apparently, “the look” is a facial expression that conveys my pure disgust with unfortunate person or situation. Supposedly, I gave my husband “the look” the first time I met him. I remember being preoccupied with more important matters just as I was preoccupied the other day when leaving work. I may have glanced at the man in the parking lot, but I certainly wasn’t thinking about him.
He thought otherwise. “I’m sorry I’m talking to myself,” he yelled over at me in an apologetic voice, “I know it’s a bad habit.”
Since I’d been lost in thought, I didn’t even know why he was talking to me.
But then I realized that I must have inadvertently given him “the look.”
I generally don’t take pleasure in intimidating people, but that realization made me smile.
Having a secret weapon that’s a secret even to me always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 215
Some songs, like some smells, immediately transport me to another time and place.
The other day, I heard John (Cougar) Mellencamp’s Jack and Diane, and I was immediately transported to hanging out at Husson’s pizza my sophomore year of high school.
That memory, and that song, always make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 214
When I was growing up, we didn’t watch home movies. We watched slide shows.
My parents had boxes of photo slides: from their time in Chile; from the time my brother and I were babies and even from my mother’s college days At least I think there were slides from my mom’s college days. All I remember was a photo of a Volkswagen Bug with a cracked front window sitting in a ditch. My mom kept that slide because it was a memory of her first car and her first car accident.
To me, it represented something else entirely: my mom, the most practical woman I knew, had owned a slug bug. That was actually cool.
When I was growing up, our name for Volkswagen Beetles was slug bugs. Whoever saw a slug bug first had permission to slug another person in the arm.
For about 30 years, I forgot about slug bugs. Then, when both my children were elementary school, I heard my son call “punch buggy” from the back seat. Then I heard my daughter yelp, “Ouch, that hurt!”
The terminology might have changed since I was a child, but not much else had.
The Volkswagen tradition made me smile.
It still does.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 213
I’ve been writing about winter weather quite a bit lately. I can’t say I’m exactly thrilled with all the snow and cold weather, but since
I have to endure it, I might as well look for the upside.
I found it yesterday morning.
I was walking my dog Rodney at dawn as the snow poured down. There were no cars and no people around as the fresh snow fell silently around us.
I couldn’t even capture the moment with a photo.
Maybe I wasn’t supposed to.
Some moments are simply meant to be felt and be revisited only in our memories.
And that realization makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 212
Events during the past have once again reminded me how fragile life is. But these same events have also reminded me how our spirit lives on even when our physical body doesn’t.
C.S. Lewis is usually credited for the words “You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.
Walter M. Miller actually wrote them.
But despite who gets the credit, that quote is brilliant.
And it always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 211
When we lived on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, our house was within shouting distance of my father’s office. Despite his proximity, I remember sitting underneath the walnut tree with Rosalee, my older next door neighbor, when my dad came home from work. I excitedly greeted him before he went in the house, and Rosalee told me with a note of derision that she would never get that excited to see her dad.
I didn’t care. I loved my dad, and I knew he loved me. After all, what other father even knew about the song Rubber Ducky much the less took the time to learn the lyrics.
To this day, I love that song because it reminds me of my dad.
And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 210
The extremely cold temperatures that have been sticking around this winter means the snow has been sticking around as well. As
the days have worn on, the snow shows us something we don’t normally see: tracks revealing where other people and animals have worked and played.
Without the snowy tracks, I wouldn’t be aware of the cats who use my yard and bushes as their personal hunting ground. Nor would I be aware of all those people whose lives are almost touching mine.
I’ve been reminded of this as my dog and I walk in the snowy tracks of others and he sniffs with interest. This is the exact same behavior he displays when we take our solitary walks and there is no snow on the ground. At those times, I often wonder what he could possibly find so interesting.
I need to remember that he is simply trying to learn about those who have gone before us.
I can learn a great deal from my dog. No matter what path I am taking in life, there has always been someone who went before and made my journey possible.
That reminder always makes me smile.

I will always pick up a penny I see one on the ground. Always.
I simply can’t risk not picking one up. I’ve always considered the possibility that the phrase find a penny; pick it up; all day long you’ll have good luck might be true.
Anything that has the potential to bring good luck always me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 208
My kids and I were out running errands last Saturday, and it was almost noon by the time we were finished. I asked them if they wanted to stop and grab lunch somewhere, and my son mentioned there was a Subway nearby.
His selection met with his sister’s approval, so I dropped them off and went to park the Jeep.
When I entered the restaurant, I stood in amazement behind my children as they ordered their sandwiches. I wasn’t as amazed by their food choices, such as pickles and mayonnaise on an Italian sub, as I was by their behavior. My son was saying “yes please” and “no thank you.”
This is the same son who generally responds to me in grunts, and I was happy to be pleasantly surprised.
But then, I always smile when my kids act like they have some sense.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 207
I’m not one of those people who think the beach is the ultimate paradise. Don’t get me wrong, I like the beach. I also like the mountains and the forest and green meadows. With that said, when the temperatures drop so low that I struggle just to walk down my short driveway to my mailbox, I like to think about warm environments.
Nothing is a better reminder than Jimmy Buffett.
His music always makes me smile.
