If people really want to reach me, they call my cell phone. I’m not even sure why we keep the phone other than it is a link to people from our past that occasionally try to reach us.

And occasionally they do.

But that wasn’t the case the other night when the phone rang and I automatically picked it up.

The woman’s words were rushed, as if she knew I was considering hanging up on her.

“I’m with the WV Bureau for Public Health and I have a few questions for you,” she said.

To be honest, at first I wasn’t even sure if I was speaking to a human or a computer. I realized she was a person when I said “I used to work there,” and she paused.

The fact that she was a person trying to do her job convinced me to give up a few minutes to answer her questions about tobacco use and taxes on tobacco.

But I answered them in my usual way. I couldn’t just answer A, B or C. I had to elaborate and explain.

By the end of the call, the woman was still reading her script and telling me that all answers would remain confidential. She was also laughing, telling me her age, talking about her job and revealing where her brother lived. Most of all, she sounded happy.

I know she has a job that probably involves a great deal of rejection, and the fact that I could allow her a few minutes of anonymous acceptance really made me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 244

I envy people who can concisely describe something that I can’t capture no matter now many words I use. Take, for example, the librarian who was talking about the difficulty some people have when following directions or completing forms.

“We need to find way to better help chronically confused people,” she said.

I loved that phrase “chronically confused” because it describes everyone from professionals who can’t complete a grant application correctly to people who have difficulty navigating day-to-day activities. The phrase also captures the frustration of dealing with such individuals in a genuine yet non-judgemental way.

And any phrase that does that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 243

My daughter was the first to notice the little girl walk into the store.

Actually, walk doesn’t describe how the five-year old made an entrance. Her arms were crossed in front of her red pea coat and she had a scowl on her face.

“Wow,” my daughter said. “Someone isn’t happy.”

A while later, my friend Julie asked, “Did you see that little girl? She is the definition of attitude.”

That girl was now tapping her black, high-heeled shoes in an impatient manner that demonstrated she did not consider shopping at a tractor supply store a good use of her time.

By the time she left, she still wasn’t smiling. But the rest of us were.

There’s something about little girls with attitude that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 242

The last episode of Seinfeld was produced the year my oldest was born, but my children were raised with the lasting impact of the television show. Most notably, they have to tolerate my imitation of the Soup Nazi when they say something about a meal I’m fixing. I will look at them and say “No (insert food item) for you” in a horrible accent.

They roll their eyes, but I always smile.

Remembering the Soup Nazi always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 241

Last July, I was frustrated with certain aspects of my life and decided to make some changes. But, like most things, I didn’t have total control of my circumstances. As I continued to address my situation, I also decided to focus on everything that is right with life.

That’s when I started to write daily about something that makes me smile. The daily exercise hasn’t been difficult. Not every day is good, but I don’t go through any day without smiling at something. Apparently, I’m not alone.

Other people have started telling me what makes them smile. People mention their smiles in conversations and send me emails about them.

I’ve always heard a smile is contagious, but I never knew writing about them could be.

And that is certainly something to smile about.

On Friday night, I went to see a local production of the musical Oklahoma. Years ago, I worked backstage on another local production of Oklahoma, and I have very fond memories of that show. At that time, no one involved could have imagined that the girl who played dancing Laurey would become a Hollywood star. We just knew Jennifer Garner as a girl who liked ballet.

Now, nearly 25 years later, I still know all the songs in Oklahoma by heart, and I sang along with the actors Friday night. My daughter noted that fact, but she didn’t complain.

She understands my love of musical theater, and I love the fact that we can share that joy.

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 239

If he were still alive, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would be celebrating his 110th birthday today. But even though he died in 1991 at the age of 86, his birthday is still celebrated as the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.

That’s because Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated more than 40 children’s books, including Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and, of course, the Cat in the Hat.

I like to celebrate his birthday for an entirely different reason. His first children’s book, And To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected more than 20 times before it was finally accepted for publication.

That fact that even Dr. Seuss didn’t immediately find success is a reminder that rejection isn’t failure.

And that reminder always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 238

The other day, my daughter asked if she could get a typewriter. I initially thought I had misheard her, but she was serious. She actually wanted a typewriter.

I told her that I been forced to do all my papers on typewriters when I was in high school, and she didn’t want one. She boasted that she had used a typewriter once and had liked it.

I just shook my head. Even the fanciest typewriters are inconvenient compared to the word processing programs we now use. Not only can we proof all our documents before we print them, we can just as easily edit those documents and print them again. What we can’t do is depend on spell check.

Unfortunately, many people, including me, often forget that.

Take, for example, the woman named Fay who missed that her own name was misspelled on an important paper. She handed it in under the name Fat.

I can relate. When I’m typing quickly, I often turn my own name, Trina, into Train. Spell check doesn’t catch that. When I worked at the United Way, I would often type Untied Way. Spell check didn’t catch that either.

I readily admit I may depend too heavily on spell check, but I also readily admit that the typos I’ve missed are entertaining. And they make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 237

For many people, February is simply a month to survive before spring arrives. I sometimes wonder if Pope Gregory considered this when the calendar was modified. By shortening the month of February, March arrives earlier than any other month. And March means spring is just around the corner.
