365 Reasons to Smile – Day 328
For over a month, I’ve been trying to get an electrician to do some minor work at my office. I thought the fact that he finally came this week was reason enough to smile.
But then I received an additional gift.
While in the attic, he found a Catholic newspaper from December 1966. I was a couple of months from being born when the paper was published, so I have no memories of those times. But when I thumbed through the paper, I was surprised a the issues being addressed (poverty in Appalachia; sex education, misuse of power and partisan politics) seemed all too familiar.
Maybe I should have been saddened that nearly 50 years later, we are struggling with the same issues. Instead, I felt a connection to the generation immediately preceding mine.
And that really made me smile.![IMG_3292[1]](https://trinabartlett.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/img_32921.jpg?w=300&h=224)

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 327
Andy Warhol is credited for saying that everyone will someday have 15 minutes of fame. What he didn’t say is whether “everyone” includes only humans or animals too.
I am pondering this because my dog Rodney has now had his 15 minutes.
I first learned about his moment when my husband called me at work to tell me that he had just sent me a link to a blog about dogs and frisbee mishaps. A picture of Rodney had been featured (he’s number six.) http://www.collegehumor.com/post/6971811/14-dog-frisbee-fails
I shared the link with everyone at work, including those who aren’t dog lovers. One said to me “You are acting like your child is a Rhodes Scholar.”
Maybe I’m just one of those parents who doesn’t have high expectations for their children, especially the animal ones. Or maybe I am a little obsessed with my dog. Or maybe I always take my smiles where I can find them: especially when someone in my family, human or canine, can, make someone else smile.
Because that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 326
A sudden thunderstorm blew into town yesterday afternoon. It featured strong winds, heavy rain and cloud to ground lightning. It roared and rumbled for about a half hour before slowly moving to the east.
Since it hit at the same time my dog was expecting his walk, I took him out as soon as the rain let up. We took our usual route by the creek that borders the local park. and as we walked by the stone restroom, I heard a strange noise.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I was listening to a person in agony or something more sinister.
Rodney, my dog, stopped and listened too. Then he actually tried to enter the restroom.
That’s when I realized the noise was from a goose that had apparently wandered into the small building during the storm. At least that’s what I deduced, and considering the dog on the end of the leash in my hand, I made no attempt to test my theory or see if the supposed goose was alright.
When we walked by on our way back, neither Rodney nor I heard any more strange noises, so I imagine the goose,or whatever was making that noise, found its way out.
The whole situation was so odd, I smiled the rest of the way home.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 325
Spring seemed to take its time arriving this year, but I did all I could to motivate it. That’s why on a slightly warm day in April, I wore a pair of open toed shoes. I was walking outside with a colleague who was wearing a jacket, and I kidded her about it.
After defending her attire and listening to me talk about seeing my toes, she said, “I grew up that you shouldn’t wear open-toed shoes until after Memorial Day.”
That was a new one to me, but I had grown up being told not to wear white shoes or white pants, skirts or shorts before Memorial Day.
I have ignored that rule for several years now, and I’m happy to report that there do not appear to be any consequences for my choice of attire.
I know whether times have changed, but so have I. I am now too old to care what other people think about my choice of attire, and I will never againwait until Memorial Day to wear what I want.
That really makes me smile.

The Earnest of Being Important
Initially, I was at a loss for words when the woman on the other end of the phone asked “What kind of person do you find most difficult?”
Silence on my part isn’t common. I generally have a great deal to say, and my words are often delivered in a constant stream of thoughts and opinions.
But I wanted to ensure I didn’t make any missteps during this conversation. I was speaking with a woman whom I admire and respect for her experience, perspective and passion for serving others. Not only that, but I knew why she was asking, and I felt the need to be cautious.
But being cautious doesn’t mean avoiding the truth, so I finally said, “people who try to elevate their own importance by misusing positions that should really be about helping others.”
The woman on the other end of the line laughed, made reference to someone we both know and the rest of the conversation was incredibly meaningful.
But our discussion has stuck with me during this long weekend: one intended to honor those who gave all they had, including their lives, for something in which they believed. Most weren’t high-ranking members of the military who received respect because of their position. Some had no option but to serve while others were following a calling. But all were soldiers, and all were important.
I can’t compare the world in which I work to that of the military. With a few exceptions, nonprofit organizations aren’t dangerous. But the work is about serving others – not about getting applause or attention or accolades. It is also a world in which I belong. After stepping away from it for just over a year, I realized it is where I do my best work.
But that doesn’t mean it is perfect.
Every day I encounter people who don’t appreciate the work or see it as less valuable than money-making businesses. But they aren’t nearly as difficult as the people who actually work in the field but don’t really understand that it is a way of life – – not just a job. And I have little tolerance for people who complain that the work is too demanding.
Here’ the deal: serving others isn’t easy.
It means we have to let go of our egos and realize that we are no more important than anyone else.
As a former boss once said: everyone who walks through the front door of our organization should be treated with the same respect – whether they are a homeless person asking for help or a potential million dollar donor. Each one is God’s child and each one deserves kind words.
I wish I could say I always follow that principle, but there are times when I have a very difficult time showing respect for colleagues who are more earnest about feeling important than they are about helping others feel important.
But on days like today, when we honor those who gave everything for others, I have to put it all in perspective.
And I remember that life isn’t intended to be easy. It is intended to be a series of lessons about how to make the world a better place. Today, families across the United States are remembering those who did just that — made sacrifices to improve the lives of others.
And the rest of us simply need to say thank you for being so important.
365 Reasons to Smile – Day 324
As a Type A personality, I may claim that I look forward to long weekends because they offer the opportunity for a little rest and relaxation. In reality, I’m absolutely horrible at relaxing. I talk about it. Sometimes I even attempt it. But I generally fail at achieving it if I’m not actually away from home. Instead, I feel guilty if I spend more than an hour doing something that has no lasting benefit.
What really makes me happy during a long weekend is tackling chores I normally don’t have time for: like weeding and yard work. What really annoys me is when I’ve ignored some of these tasks for a long time – too long.
Such was the situation when I decided to tackle a neglected flower garden that included poison ivy leaves as big as my head.
Initially, I was annoyed. But then I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment when I was able to trim the poison ivy off the rhododendron bush. Not only did the garden look better, but I seem to have avoided any rash – which is an even greater achievement for me.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 323
433I haven’t been able to buy clothes for my children without their approval for years.
While my daughter still wants me to shop with her, my son has no desire or need to have me around when he’s shopping.
To be honest, this arrangement works well since I have more concerns about what my daughter wears than what my son does.
I’m not being sexist. I just know my son will never cross the line. Granted, he has an irreverent sense of humor and his clothes tend to represent it, but he has never crossed the line. Instead, his clothing selections are entertaining.
Which is why I broke into a wide grin when he handed me a bag from a recent shopping trip.
One of his purchases was a plain t-shirt with the words “Save Ferris.” I’m not sure whether it was a reference to the band or the movie but either way, it made me smile.
I always smile when I am reminded of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 322
As I write this, a breeze is blowing the curtains in my kitchen. As the curtains gently billow out then settle back into their normal spot, I am reminded of an incident decades ago.
I had taken a summer babysitting job in the days when many houses had no central air conditioning. I was feeding lunch to two sisters: a toddler and her four year-old sister, and I sat at the kitchen table watching them eat their peanut butter sandwiches (because back then we didn’t worry about peanut allergies). I could feel the sweat trickling down my back, and the limited energy both girls were demonstrating was testimony to the hot, sticky air we were enduring.
And then a small miracle happened.
A breeze blew through the open kitchen window stirring both the curtains and all of us around the table.
The toddler, Annie, who was just learning to speak, tilted her head back, closed her eyes, stuck her arms out to her side as if to embrace the air and said with delight, “BEEZE, BEEZE BEEZE.”
I smiled at her complete joy.
I still do.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 321
I don’t know what I like most about this time of year: how quickly storms pass and let the sun shine or how new flowers blossom every day.
Just this week I noticed the Irises taking over everyone’s gardens with their regal beauty.
And they really made me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 320
Apparently, my daughter read a book that mentioned the television show Gilligan’s Island, which piqued her curiosity. So the oth
er night I sat down to watch an old episode with her.
Needless to say, she wasn’t very impressed.
Instead, she was confused.
She just couldn’t wrap her mind around the concept that Ginger wore evening gowns on a tropical island. Not only that, but she had apparently gone on a three-hour boat tour with a trunk full of dresses.
Our subsequent discussion about Ginger’s wardrobe (and hair) was entertaining,
But then, trying to figure out television shows from the 1960’s often makes me smile.
