365 Reasons to Smile – Day 158

My daughter left her “notebook” on the desk in our home office the other day, and I picked it up to and flipped through it.That-always-seemed-so-ridiculous

Just to clarify, this was just a notebook and not a diary.  Therefore, I did not violate her privacy. The notebook is one that she uses to write down quotes.

Kendall loves quotes. She loves quotes A LOT. So much so that she constantly feels the need to share them with friends and family. When I say constantly, I mean constantly. And because the quotes are constant, I don’t always pay that much attention.

But flipping through her notebook the other day really gave me insight into the person Kendall is becoming. ‘

One of her favorite quotes was highlighted.

“That’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereals based on color rather than taste.” John Green.

Reading that quote makes me smile. Knowing that my daughter is not a superficial person makes me smile even more.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 157

frost on carWinter has definitely arrived, and with it school closings and warnings about hazardous road conditions.

Among those warnings are the reminders that driving with snow or ice on a car could result in a ticket.

My husband and I are fortunate. We have a two-car garage that has room for two vehicles. That means we don’t have to budget time to scrape frost, ice and snow off our cars on winter mornings.

Of course, there are times we have to budget time to shovel the driveway, but that’s something else entirely.

Because on most winter mornings, I’m thrilled to jump in the Jeep and just go.

Being able to do that always  makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 156

christmas treeI’ve been told that when I get older, I will eventually change. Maybe that’s true.

But for now, I simply will not accept an artificial tree as our family Christmas tree. I’m fine with smaller artificial trees in the house, but THE Christmas tree must be real.

I can attribute my need for a real tree to my father, who was a forester and always ensured we had a real tree from a real forest when I was a child.

But in all honesty, I love a real tree for two reasons.

The first is our family tradition of going to the Christmas tree farm to search for the perfect tree, cut it down, carry it to be bailed and then wait for hours while my husband ensures that it is firmly secured on the Jeep.

The second is the smell of a real tree in our house.  There is absolutely nothing like it, and candles or other attempts to capture that smell are jut not the same.

Every time I walk past my living room and catch the smell of this year’s Douglas Fir, I smile.

But then, a real Christmas tree always makes me smile.

The Cattle Guard

cattleguard2If you’ve never felt the need to test boundaries, then there is absolutely no reason to read any further.

You will never understand why I am confused by a cattle guard.

But if you have ever done something that went in the face of what is generally considered normal, then you will understand why every time I ride my bike on a certain road, I am confused.

There is a spot on that road where the only thing that separates me from the cows is a cattle guard.

The cows stand on one side, and I stand on the other side wondering why they don’t even attempt to cross. I’ve even crossed the cattle guard a few times, said hello to the cows then crossed back.

They never try to do the same for me.

I’ve been told cattle guards are constructed so the legs of the cows fall between the metal bars, which is what prevents them from crossing.

That still doesn’t explain why they never attempt to cross.

If I were  cow, I’d be standing on my tiptoes trying to cross the gate and make my way to the field across the road.  But then, I’ve spent most of my life trying to cross my own cattle guards, and most of those times, I’ve failed.

Generally, I’ve  only managed to get halfway across a cattle guard, but at least I tried. I’ve tested limits and questioned authority, and the stories and adventures will stay with me forever.

Standing in the same field for eternity and never trying to cross the cattle guard doesn’t make much of a story. Nor does it allow for any type of growth.

Maybe that’s why those cows never try to cross they cattle guard. Maybe they are programmed to grow physically but not intellectually or spiritually. Or maybe they are programmed more for fear than for adventure.

But I don’t think people are programmed in the same way, which is why I don’t understand why some people simply accept what they are told and never even attempt to cross a few cattle guards. Instead, they complain and never move forward.

Not me.

I may have bruises and scars from the cattle guards I’ve tried to cross, but that’s not stopping me from attempting to cross a few more.

The effort is definitely worth the pain.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 147

The day my daughter was big enough to move from the back to the front seat of the car was an adjustment.

Make that constant adjustments.  Kendall can’t simply listen to one radio station, and she is constantly searching for the perfect song. When she finds it, she sings along at the top of her lungs. When it ends, she immediately goes through the array of stations again.

I’d find it annoying if I weren’t so impressed with her vocal skills when she sings with her favorite  songs, which are generally the latest hits by Pink, Imagine Dragons, Miranda Lambert, Bruno Mars, Train, etc. That’s why I was surprised when I was driving her to dance on Tuesday night and she stopped on a station that was playing the Simple Minds song “Don’t You Forget About Me.”

She turned to me and said, “Let’s listen to The Breakfast Club song.

I grinned from ear to ear. That movie came out when I was a senior in high school, and I first saw it on my 18th birthday. The fact that my daughter “gets it” always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 146

Eighty years ago today, my grandparents were married.

Fifty years ago today, my parents were married.

Twenty years ago today, my husband and I were married.

If that’s not a reason to smile, I don’t know what is.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 145

jfkgratitudequoteAt church on Sunday, our pastor was intent on encouraging the congregation to make Thanksgiving less trite and more meaningful.

I got exactly what he was saying.

Making a list of things for which we are thankful for is simple.  Living a life that demonstrates our gratitude and shares our blessings is entirely different.

John F. Kennedy understood this, and his quote about gratitude being shown not by the words we utter but by the life we live always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 144

I realized years ago that I would never be completely happy without a dog in my life, and I’ve been grateful for all my furry friends. Each was extremely special.

rodney smiling (2)My current dog, Rodney, has a vise-like grip on my heart  that strengthens every time he has an opportunity to play with a ball. Believe it or not, my previous two dogs had absolutely  no interest and would give me with a “you want me to do what?” look when I threw one

But Rodney compensates.rodney dribbling (2)

He loves to play catch and, believe it or not, even a bit of soccer.

His complete joy when playing with a ball always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 143

thank-youI love my new job.

I know I’m in the honeymoon phase since I’ve only spent six days on the job, but I am already completely infatuated. Among those things which make me believe my job and I are a match made in heaven is the fact that I attended  a meeting yesterday that started with a moment of gratitude.

Everyone in attendance was given an opportunity to express his/her thanks for something. I gave thanks for my new job… and for the fact that my heat pump is still working.

On the coldest morning so far this fall, my ancient heat pump groaned a bit, but it still managed to do its job. Several people giggled when I said this, but I truly am grateful. I am also grateful that there is a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in every night and food in my refrigerator and cupboards. Many people don’t have any of those things.

But the fact I do always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 140

you-can-observe-a-lot-just-by-watchingI love to people watch. If I had the time, I could do it all day, but I rarely have the time and even when I do, I’m usually interrupted. Generally, I’m interrupted by the people whom I am watching.

For the record, I don’t stare or act inappropriate when people walk by me. But, for some reason, they know I’m watching and take that as an invitation to start talking.

During a recent shopping trip with my children,, they both wanted something to eat.  I gave them a few dollars and told them I’d sit down and watch our packages while they went and bought food. No sooner had they left when I observed a woman with a walker approaching. As she got closer, I smiled politely, but I definitely didn’t stare.  Apparently I did something that she took as an invitation, because she began telling me about her recent knee operation and even asked me advice about having a total knee replacement.

I don’t think I look particularly intelligent nor do I look like I possess any kind of medical knowledge. But that didn’t matter, and we chatted for several minutes.

That wasn’t an unusual instance, and after years of engaging in conversations about the personal lives and health problems of receptions, cashiers and random strangers, I’ve come to realize that there might as well be a sign over my head that says, “She’ll listen, because people simply interest her.”

I like to people watch, but what I like even more is that strangers trust me enough to give a little bit of themselves to me.

And that always makes me smile.
