365 Reasons to Smile – Day 156

christmas treeI’ve been told that when I get older, I will eventually change. Maybe that’s true.

But for now, I simply will not accept an artificial tree as our family Christmas tree. I’m fine with smaller artificial trees in the house, but THE Christmas tree must be real.

I can attribute my need for a real tree to my father, who was a forester and always ensured we had a real tree from a real forest when I was a child.

But in all honesty, I love a real tree for two reasons.

The first is our family tradition of going to the Christmas tree farm to search for the perfect tree, cut it down, carry it to be bailed and then wait for hours while my husband ensures that it is firmly secured on the Jeep.

The second is the smell of a real tree in our house.  There is absolutely nothing like it, and candles or other attempts to capture that smell are jut not the same.

Every time I walk past my living room and catch the smell of this year’s Douglas Fir, I smile.

But then, a real Christmas tree always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 155

parenthoodThe day my son was born, my husband turned to me and said, “this is the best day ever.”

In all honesty, at the time, I wasn’t sure I believed him. Being a parent was never on my list of things I had to accomplish in my life.

It should have been.

Last night, I did nothing but enjoy time with my two children. We decorated the Christmas tree. I made one of their favorite meals (chicken and dumplings). And we watched a silly movie together.

There was nothing particularly exciting or interesting about the evening.

But there was a great deal that was memorable and meaningful.

That’s because the most important moments in life or not necessarily those that are the most exciting but the ones that connect us with people who matter.

My kids matter.

They also make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 154

selflessIn a meeting this week, I was unusually quiet as I listened to well-intended individuals talking about what they could to help the homeless in our community.

One man, who is still homeless but also conducts outreach to help others, took my breath away.

“I had a few dollars and I bought her a coat. It wasn’t my money anyway. All money is God’s money.”

I’m generally a person who strives to change systems because I know the work of one person is  limited. But then I look at the accomplishments of Nelson Mandela and of Scott, the homeless helper, and I realize the power of one person.

There is something absolutely inspiring about people who live to serve others.

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 153

nelson mandela 2I was picking my daughter up from dance and my husband was waiting for my son’s holiday concert to start when I received the text.

“I didn’t even know the guy, but I am still in tears.”

I called my husband to ask what had happened.

“Nelson Mandela died,” he said. “And it’s not just that. It’s what everyone is saying about him.”nelson mandela 3

I got it.

Our generation doesn’t have a lot of heroes. Constant media attention exposed the mistakes and faults of  leaders, athletes and politicians.

But my generation actually got to witness what Nelson Mandela was willing to endure for social justice. And we got to witness his redemption.

His words will stay with us forever.

And even though we mourn the loss of Nelson Mandela, one of our only true heroes, we also celebrate his accomplishments and all the good he leaves behind.

His good works will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 152

Years ago, a group of friends made a trip to Margaritaville every summer. We visited different cities for a weekend of fun and an massageroutdoor Jimmy Buffet concert.

The trip we made to Pittsburgh is most memorable for many reasons. That’s the trip where the whim was born. (A whim allows anyone in the car to stop anywhere for any reason during a road trip.) During that trip, one whim included going to see  movie. That’s also the trip when my husband misused the term bovine and referred  to it as a small weasel-like creature. (This is my husband who depends on the English to make a living.)

And that is the trip when a visit to the Sharper Image gave a good friend and I moments of laughter that would last for years.

I will never be able to adequately describe the incident when I turned on a hand-held massager and it went bouncing across a counter. I tried to catch it while muttering “oooh, oooh oooh.”  For months, my friend Pam and I couldn’t describe the incident without breaking into belly-ache laughs.

At some point, Pam clipped an ad for the massager and sent it to me in a card. I kept it for a while then sent it back to her. That ad went back and forth for years before it was finally lost.

But the memory hasn’t been. That moment still makes Pam and me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 151

Last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, I felt too harried to be thankful.good_neighbor_quote But like so many other times in my life when I’ve been focused on the wrong things, my focus was quickly redirected. Three  of my neighbors showed me how fortunate I am.

The first  called me to warn me about possible scam artists in the neighborhood.  The second bought  a bag of cat food for me when I told him I didn’t want to go the grocery store…again. The third  told me I shouldn’t worry about my house being clean or the Thanksgiving meal being perfect. “As long as your kids are happy and healthy, what else do you need to worry about?” she asked.

She was right, and the fact that I have such great neighbors was just another reason to be thankful – and to smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 150

be yourselfI generally feel most lost when I am in a crowd of people.

That’s not because I’m particularly introverted, and I’m definitely not shy. But I, like most people, have demons, and my greatest demon is my tendency to compare myself to others.

When I’m in a crowd where people are telling stories or talking about their latest home improvement projects or sharing recipes, my immediate reaction is to think they are so much accomplished or more social or more interesting than I am.

That’s my demon. But the angels who save me are people like Oscar Wilde. His famous quote  “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” reminds me that the only thing I should expect to perfect is being myself.

And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 149

On Friday, my parents quietly celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. There was no party and no fanfare. Most of their friends and acquaintances probably didn’t even recognize the importance of the day.

But my dad did. In a blog he started only a couple of months ago, he wrote about his first date with my mom (My Parent’s First Date).

When I read it, it brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face.

But then, a love that is still going strong after fifty years will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 148

During a quick trip to the grocery store on Friday, everything screamed “Christmas.” Christmas music was playing, Christmas decorations hung in the windows and  all the store displays were related to Christmas

I was o.k with that. It was, after all, the day after Thanksgiving and the store wasn’t violating any of my sensibilities. On Wednesday, it had been decorated for Thanksgiving, which also didn’t violate my sensibilities. Decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving always violates my sensibilities.

adventI have issues with the Christmas season beginning too early. I always have.

I’ll never forget helping my mother at a Christmas Bazaar when I was still in grade school. I don’t remember the year, but I remember the date: December 5. I was absolutely convinced that was way too early to be celebrating Christmas.

My rationale was that my parents didn’t even get a tree until Christmas was less than two weeks away. In hindsight, I probably thought that Christmas Eve was twice as long as any other day, and I certainly didn’t want to extend the waiting period any longer than was absolutely necessary.

As an adult, I now think the month of December flies by way too quickly, and I would do everything possible to slow it down.

I also know that the reason Advent is so special is because it is short-lived.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 147

The day my daughter was big enough to move from the back to the front seat of the car was an adjustment.

Make that constant adjustments.  Kendall can’t simply listen to one radio station, and she is constantly searching for the perfect song. When she finds it, she sings along at the top of her lungs. When it ends, she immediately goes through the array of stations again.

I’d find it annoying if I weren’t so impressed with her vocal skills when she sings with her favorite  songs, which are generally the latest hits by Pink, Imagine Dragons, Miranda Lambert, Bruno Mars, Train, etc. That’s why I was surprised when I was driving her to dance on Tuesday night and she stopped on a station that was playing the Simple Minds song “Don’t You Forget About Me.”

She turned to me and said, “Let’s listen to The Breakfast Club song.

I grinned from ear to ear. That movie came out when I was a senior in high school, and I first saw it on my 18th birthday. The fact that my daughter “gets it” always makes me smile.
