As a teenager, I remember getting extremely angry with my father.  That might not seem that unusual, but as a teenager, I was rarely angry with my father. My poor mother was generally the target of my rage.

But during one family dinner, me dad made me so mad I remember the moment to this day.

I don’t remember what the conversation was about, but I do remember my dad said, “You can’t count on anyone but yourself. Other people will always disappoint you. You have to learn not to disappoint yourself.”

My dad is 33 years older than me, so I should have realized there was experience behind his words. But teenagers really recognize the wisdom of their elders.

I told my dad that there would always be people in my life on whom I could count. He argued that, ultimately, people always have their own best interest at heart. I told him he’d never had friends like mine.

Those friends I was so sure would always be there for me have either disappeared or are now  mere acquaintances. Friends have moved in and out of my life for the last 30 years. My family hasn’t always been nearby. The only person who has been a constant in my life is me.

And even though I’m not perfect, there are many things I can do well,

I can, and have, changed a flat tire. I can, and have  traveled to strange places by myself. And I can, and have, called new and old friends to help when I needed assistance.

My dad was entirely right when he said I could only count on myself.  But I also have confidence that I am able to surround myself with people who support and help me.

i couldn’t do any of that without having been taught the importance of independence. I’m very grateful that my father raised a daughter who knew the importance of that.

That will always makes me smile.
