365 Reasons To Smile – Day 253

clean-memeWhen my children were young, I dreaded play dates at our house. Well, I didn’t dread the play dates. I dreaded that the play dates came with mothers attached, and I always felt the need for my house to be clean when they came. Since, I’m not a naturally clean person, the hours before the play date were generally filled by manic cleaning.

These days, when my children”get together” with friends, I generally only see other parents when I wave from the front door. That means, I stress less about the condition of my house.

That’s why I was amused the other day when my son was excited that we had purchased a new vacuum cleaner. He wanted to clean his “teen cave” in the basement before a friend came over.

I am under no illusion that he inherited some mutant “clean” gene, and I know his concern was probably related to the fact that the cat’s litter box is in the basement. But his interest in cleaning made me smile anyway.

I’m a Social Worker, Not a Stereotype

I'M A SOCIAL WORKERBack in the early 1990’s when I worked for the WV AIDS Program, some people assumed I was a lesbian.

Now that I work for Catholic Charities, some people assume I’m Catholic.

Neither assumption ever bothered me even though they were wrong.

But when people make assumptions about social workers, I have a deep-seated desire to say “Dammit Jim, I’m a social worker not a stereotype.”

I don’t believe that giving handouts will save the world. I don’t believe that I have to hug and empathize with everyone I encounter. And most of all, I don’t believe anyone with a good heart can do my job.

In reality, most social workers I know don’t believe in just giving handouts. We also know that if we don’t provide people with the basic resources they need, they certainly aren’t going to be able or open to making tough decisions that may help them improve their circumstances.. What social workers do believe is that people can change and that we should never give up on anyone. We also believe that no one is more important or more “worthy” than any other person. Most of all, we believe that people are responsible for their own lives. Sometimes. they simply need more support to accomplish their goals.

Also, in contrast to popular opinion, not every social worker has a warm and fuzzy personality. We don’t see life through rose-colored glasses and we don’t always see the best in people. We realize that some people survive by scamming others, that there are individuals who will do their best to “manipulate” the system and that there are people who are just plain lazy. We also know that not everyone had the advantages of growing up in a family that treasured children, respected boundaries and believed in delayed gratification. Poverty isn’t just about lack of money but about lack of support. Being able to provide that support is what motivates us.

Most of all, not just anyone can do our jobs. This past week, I was in a meeting with an individual who helps low-income families. As she gave her report, the fact that she is not a social worker became obvious. She was discussing a situation in which an individual didn’t want to complete an application for assistance without his friend.

“Maybe he couldn’t read,” I suggested.

“Oh, no,” she said. “I’ve had people tell me they couldn’t read. He didn’t say that. He just said he wanted to wait for his friend before he completed the form.”

I wanted to scream. I’m pretty sure the other social workers in the room also wanted to scream but didn’t. That’s
because social workers try very hard to be non-judgmental. And sometimes we fail miserably. I should know. T
here have been so many times over the past few years when I’ve wanted to scream at people who think doing nice things for poor people is social work. Being nice to low-income people has nothing to do with social work, which requires a college degree and a license. Many social workers help low-income people, but their job is not to be nice (although most are). Their job is to help individuals and families help themselves.

So instead of screaming, I strategize. I think about how we can engage low-income, middle class and wealthy individuals in supporting those who are struggling. I think about how we can educate all people about inequality. Most of all, I think about what I can do to convince everyone that all people matter.

And then, I act.

Because that’s what social workers do.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 252

Before I became a parent, I remember being told that the best way to have really meaningful conversations with your children is in a moving automobile.

I agree.

I also agree they are the best way to get to know almost anyone.

I’ve been on the road quite a bit during the past week, but fortunately I shared that time with others. Yesterday, for example, I learned more about three of my co-workers  than I could during any staff retreat or meeting.

And the conversation was delightful, but then, getting to know other people always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 251

I didn’t let the wind stop me from walking my dog the other night.  If I had more common sense, I would have. After all, branches were creaking and snapping and the gusts were whipping around all sorts of objects.  I even was hit with a couple flying objects.

But instead of turning back, I walked on. And as I did, I was reminded of Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. The Walt Disney classic animated short story starts with Pooh walking through the Hundred Acre Woods on a very windy day. He wishes all his friends  “Happy Winds Day,” and Tigger, the character with whom I best relate, makes an appearance

At one point in the film, the wind blows Pooh and Piglet up to Owl’s House, located in a tree being rocked by the wind.

That film and story always make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 250

When I was in junior high, jumbo sticks of flavored Bonne Bell LipSmackers were all the rage.lip smackers

Fast forward more 35 years, and my daughter would scoff at the over-sized lip gloss that we put on chains.

eosInstead, she and her peers are all about egg-shaped eos organic lip balm.

She’s such a fan she has even convinced me to use the oddly shaped stuff.

Not only do I like it, but I have to smile every time I use it.

Living long enough to see silly trends come and go always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 249

My daughter was still sleeping when I got home from walking the dog Sunday morning. Before I woke her, I simply watched her for a few minutes.

As my children have grown older, I’ve forgotten the joy of just watching them sleep.

There is something peaceful and reassuring about seeing those we love most in peaceful slumber.IMG_2591

That always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 248

IMG_2597The warm weather yesterday wasn’t just a reminder that we are finally saying goodbye to a long, hard  winter.

It was also a reminder that I hadn’t had much of a weekend.

I was out-of-town for meetings Friday and Saturday, lost an hour of sleep Sunday morning taught Sunday school and went to church then, afterwards, (almost) patiently sat through a three-hour church council meeting.

I was back at work early Monday morning. On the most beautiful day in months, I was at my desk in my office.

I could have felt sorry for myself. Instead, I appreciated the fact that I have windows in my office so I could enjoy the sun.  I was also grateful that I can once again use my hand after shattering my wrist and breaking bones in my arm. I was even glad that I had lost an hour of sleep.  Daylight savings time meant I would have sufficient sunlight to enjoy the beautiful weather on my bike after work.

And I did.

That will keep me smiling all week.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 247

Like the dog Dug in the Pixar movie Up, I am easily distracted. That’s why, when I have to concentrate, I put in earphones and listen to music.

I know some people, especially those with whom I work, don’t always understand how listening to music can help write a grant or complete a report. I really don’t either. I just know it does.

Which is why, while I was going through a pile of emergency assistance applications for approval and payment last week, I was streaming music on Pandora.

Like other technology, Pandora pays attention to my tastes and tries to feed them. That means I am often treated to songs I had forgotten.

That was the case when Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry. Be Happy” came on.

Hearing that song may have distracted me for a moment, but it also  made me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 246

irisI agree with the saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. After all, our experiences and  influence our tastes.

But I also believe that some things are so beautiful that they transcend personal tastes.

Take, for example, a gift I received on my birthday. The flower blossoming in my window can’t help but capture the eye of anyone who meets with me.

It also can’t help but remind me of the beauty of friendship in my own life.

And that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile – Day 245

hebrewsI have no idea why I answered the house phone.

If people really want to reach me, they call my cell phone. I’m not even sure why we keep the phone other than it is a link to people from our past that occasionally try to reach us.

And occasionally they do.

But that wasn’t the case the other night when the phone rang and I automatically picked it up.

The woman’s words were rushed, as if she knew I was considering hanging up on her.

“I’m with the WV Bureau for Public Health and I have a few questions for you,” she said.

To be honest, at first I wasn’t even sure if I was speaking to a human or a computer. I realized she was a person when I said “I used to work there,” and she paused.

The fact that she was a person trying to do her job convinced me to give up a few minutes to answer her questions about tobacco use and taxes on tobacco.

But I answered them in my usual way. I couldn’t just answer A, B or C. I had to elaborate and explain.

By the end of the call, the woman was still reading her script and telling me that all answers would remain confidential. She was also laughing, telling me her age, talking about her job and revealing where her brother lived. Most of all, she sounded happy.

I know she has a job that probably involves a great deal of rejection, and the fact that I could allow her a few minutes of anonymous acceptance really made me smile.
