365 Reasons to Smile – Day 286
When I was a child, my mother took me to Portland to see Mr. Rogers in person. We even have a photo of me sitting right in front of him.
To be honest, I remember thinking I was bit too old for Mr. Rogers at the time.
In hindsight, I think it’s absolutely awesome that I shook Fred Rogers hand.
When I have days that I question why I have to deal with difficult people or whether I’m justified in rolling my eyes at people who collect a paycheck but don’t care about the quality of their work, I just have to remember the words of Mr. Rogers.
And that always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 285
I got home the other day to find my husband in the family room and The Princess Bride on the television. I glanced at the television and then at my husband.
I said The Princes Bride again? He nodded, and together we said, “This is such a great movie.”
No matter how many times we watch it, it always makes us smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 284
I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of a good spring rain pounding on the roof.
The rain was still falling steadily when I took my German Shepherd for his morning walk, which started in the dark. As the sun rose, I noticed the earthworms wiggling in the streets.
They were everywhere and ranged from small to large.
While the worms reminded me of seventh grade science class when we had to dissect them, they reminded me of something else as well.
There are so many creatures that are an important part of our world but generally go unnoticed, unseen and unrecognized. Most days, I never think about worms or their important job. Earthworms aerate and mix the soil, and they are considered beneficial for helping plants grow.
Seeing so many worms in the streets reminded me that not only is the world a complicated and wondrous place, but we all have purpose.
Realizing that made me smile as I splashed through the puddles.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 283
Wh
en I was an adolescent, I saw my first dogwood tree in bloom. I remember because my mom stopped to show me the petals and tell me the legend of the dogwood.
The story goes something like this: wood from a dogwood was used to build the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Because of its role, God both cursed and blessed the tree. It was cursed so it would always be small and never grow large enough for its wood to be used for another cross. It was blessed so it would produce beautiful flowers each Easter and the petals would form the shape of a cross. The tips of each of each four petals are indented as if they bear a nail print.
My mother only told me the story once, but I remember it every spring when the dogwoods bloom.
And both the memory and the blooms always make me smile

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 282
My German Shepherd Rodney woke me up at the crack of dawn Sunday morning. He was standing at the window barking. Apparently a deer had wandered into our yard and because the windows were open, Rodney had heard it.
But I didn’t mind the early morning wake up call.
There is something absolutely wonderful about sleeping with open windows and waking up to breezes blowing and birds singing. It always makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 281
I realized about a month ago that 2014 is a very significant year of birthdays in my family: My daughter will
turn 13, my son just turned 16, my husband just turned 50 and my dad will soon turn 80.
Maybe having so many significant birthdays in one year is common in other families, but I still like to think my family is somewhat special.
And that really makes me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 280
The people I admire most are those who go out on a limb for a cause because they are willing to put others before themselves.
But I also admire creative people who write good books and scripts. Even more, I admire the people who find just the right music to accent the mood or enhance the scene being portrayed on screen.
I have discovered more great music by watching television and paying attention to the music in movies than I ever have by listening to the radio.
And discovering great music will always make me smile.

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 279
I was sitting in my Jeep with my laptop in my lap (how appropriate) trying to get some work done while waiting for my daughter’s
dance class to end. As is usual these days, numerous potential wi-fi connections were available.
The name of one in particular caught my attention: “DEAsurveillancevan. ” I had to laugh. Someone else had joined the craze of getting creative in naming their personal wi-fi connections.
Before seeing that name, my favorite had been “justdontwatchporn.”
I love creativity, and I love people who can find humor and joy in the simplest things it life. That always makes me smile

365 Reasons to Smile – Day 277
One of things I enjoy most about riding my bike is the conversations I have with the cows who gaze at me with their big, brown eyes.
I talk to them, and they pretend to listen. I sing to them and they don’t cringe. And they always seem to think I am the most interesting thing around.
Despite my regular interactions with cows, I’d never seen one actually smile at me.
But one did the other day. She showed her teeth and everything.
I returned the smile, and I still smile every time I look at the picture.
