365 Reasons To Smile- Day 186
I don’t want anyone to think I’m writing my smile for Day 186 because I’m
feeling self-righteous. I’m not. I’m writing because I’m feeling very fortunate.
The reality struck me yesterday as I was hurrying to my car in five degree weather. Not only could I see my breath, I could almost see icicles hanging off it. The wind blowing across the parking lot made the air feel even colder, and all I could think about was warm air.
That’s when I noticed the woman smoking in the frigid old. In these days of clean indoor air laws, there are probably few places other than her home and her car where she is allowed to smoke. She was heading to her car, but she hadn’t reached it yet. Just watching her inhale and exhale made my lungs ache.
And that’s when I realized how fortunate I am not to be addicted to cigarettes. And being fortunate always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 185
I know my kids are at the age when I can no longer pick out clothes for them. But like everything, there are always exceptions. Which is why I thought I’d done well when I bought my daughter a sweatshirt with the words “District 12 Tribute” for Christmas. She’s an avid Hunger Games fan, ans when she opened the present and smiled, I was confident I’d nailed it.
Fast forward a few days later when she walked into my room wearing the shirt.
“I don’t get this,” she said.
“What?” I asked confused.
“This doesn’t have a hood or a pocket,” she said. “What type of shirt is this?”
“It’s a sweatshirt,” I said.
“You mean a shirt you’re supposed to sweat in?” she asked as she walked away, pulling it over her head in preparation to put on a real shirt, aka a hoodie.
I could have been offended, but instead I smiled, Sometimes reality checks make me do that.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 184
On an icy morning, I carefully crossed the street to the building where I was facilitating a planning session for a
local nonprofit organization. Relieved I’d made it safely without a fall, I smiled at the woman who walked in the door with me. We walked together to the small elevator, where she held the door for me. Then she looked at the device on my arm and said, “you too?”
She showed me what looked to be some type of robotic device on her arm. “At least mine was my left arm,” she said.
“What happened?” I asked.
I was walking my dog and tripped over him,” she answered.
“I was walking my dog and slipped on ice,” I said.
“I fell on a beautiful day,” she said. “But I have a German Shepherd, and he stopped to look at something and I didn’t stop.”
By this time the elevator had stopped on the third floor, and we got off together. “My dog is a German Shepherd too,” I told her
We were both headed to the same meeting, so we continued to talk and discovered we also had the same doctor.
With only ten people at the meeting, the coincidence that two of us shared such similar stores made me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 183
I walked into the family room where my daughter was on the sofa reading while a random show aimed at pre-teens was on the television. The show depicted a group of teens from 2013 who time traveled back to the 1980’s, or at least to the writers’ and director’s version of the life of teenagers in the 1980’s.
I spent all of my teen years in the 1980’s, and I don’t remember them being anything like what I was seeing on our television screen. We certainly didn’t all talk like Valley Girls, and I don’t remember one guy wearing a powder blue tuxedo with a ruffled shirt to prom. As I critiqued the show, my daughter explained the show was supposed to take place in 1986, as if that explained everything. By 1986, I was in college and was apparently too old to know what was happening in high schools. I told her I was pretty sure that powder blue tuxedos and beaded tops weren’t the rage, but she rolled her eyes.
Her eye roll was the same one I gave my mother about 35 years ago when she told me that she was a teenager in
the 1950’s and she didn’t remember high school being anything like it was portrayed in the television show Happy Days.
But we parents do our share of eye rolling, too. There are now 80’s days at school. When I was in school, we had 50’s days. My eye rolls at my daughter’s efforts to mimic the past are probably the same as my mom’s were when I tried to mimic the 50’s.
Realizing that the past will always be the past and can never truly be recreated makes me recognize the importance of treasuring every moment.
It also makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 182
Few things in life are guaranteed, but there is one thing in my life that is. Shortly after a new year begins, I will definitely write the wrong year when I date something. Here’s another guarantee: once I do that, I won’t do it again for another year.
Yesterday at work, I wrote the wrong year on a form. Instead of berating myself, I smiled.
I made the mistake, and now I’ll remember the correct year for the next 12 months. If I were perfect, I’d never write the wrong year at all. Since I’m not perfect, I need that yearly mistake to remind me to think about a date before putting it in ink.
Knowing I can learn from my mistakes always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 181
On New Year’s Day, my daughter and I went to see the movie Saving Mr. Banks. The movie tells the back story of both the Disney classic Mary Poppins and P.L Travers, the author who brought Mary Poppins to life.
For the rest of New Years Day, I caught my daughter singing “A Spoonful of Sugar” from the Disney movie, and my memory took me back to another Mary Poppins story: my own.
When I was in second grade, our class the theme of our spring program was Mary Poppins. I remember the boys painted large cardboard boxes to look like chimneys and danced and sang to “Chim Chim Chimeree.” I remember the girls wore giant spoons made of aluminum foil with their faces in the center of the bowls while they sang “A Spoonful of Sugar.”
I have no doubt P.L. Travers would have been horrified, but she would have been even more offended by the girl who played Mary Poppins: me.
I delivered my lines before each song just fine. My costume was the problem.
My teacher had sent a note to my parents describing what I needed. The blouse and skirt were appropriate, but the umbrella was anything but. The only umbrella my parents could find was a clear plastic one shaped rather like a bubble. My parents insisted it would work as “an umbrella is simply an umbrella.”
I wasn’t nearly so sure. And, as I made my entrance by prancing among the cardboard boxes twirling the open umbrella, I knew that I was doing a disservice to Mary Poppins.
Nearly 40 years later, I still think I did. But that doesn’t mean the memory doesn’t make me smile.
Goofy childhood memories always make me smile,

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 180
One of the many challenges I faced over the past couple weeks is has been ensuring I don’t get my right arm wet. At first, I tried to wrap my arm in plastic bags while taking a shower, but that was just frustrating. Then, a few days ago, I decided to try a bath. I could simply prop my arm on the side of the tub, and the solution worked well.
Maybe it was because the hospital staff specifically talked about keeping my arm dry while in the shower. Maybe it’s because I couldn’t remember the last time I’d even taken a bath. Or maybe it’s because I’ve been programmed to believe that baths are a luxury that require time I couldn’t afford. Or so I thought.
Because there is nothing like a soak in a tub to ease both body and mind. Simply put, soaking in a bath is time well spent, and that always makes me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 179
I love to people watch, which is a good thing since that was the most appealing form of entertainment while I sat waiting for the doctor yesterday afternoon. I was by far the youngest patient, but I was most decidedly older than the young woman chatting with her co-workers behind the front desk.
She was loudly telling them, and therefore all the patients, about her plans for the rest of the day: New Year’s Eve.
As soon as she got off work, she was going to drive to New York City to see the ball drop. She was obviously excited and seemed oblivious to the fact that most of us in the waiting room were incapacitated in some way and would probably be doing very little reveling.
Her co-workers were trying to curb her enthusiasm. “You’ll never make it,” one of them told her.
“Oh yes we will,” she said. I get off at 4:30, and we are leaving immediately. It’s only about four hours.”
“You’ll be ringing in the year stuck in a tunnel or on a bridge,” said another woman. “Everyone will be trying to get into the city. Besides, anyone who is going to be in Times Square at midnight is already there.”
The discussion continued as the young woman insisted she would see the ball drop while her colleagues tried to convince her otherwise.
In the meantime, I looked around the waiting room at people who were in slings and casts; who were using crutches and walkers; and who were suffering and pain. At first, the young woman’s concern with her celebration seemed rude and unfair, especially considering the people she was supposed to be serving. But nobody seemed bothered, and I wasn’t the only person who appeared amused by her unrealistic expectations.
That’s when I was struck by the thread that ties all of us together.
Despite our age differences, our various injuries and the fact that none of us knew each other, all of us had
something in common with the young woman who wanted to go to Times Square: we were all holding on to hope. Our hope was for healing and hers was for a good time, but we all understood that we would be welcoming the new year with hope.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 178
As 2013 winds up, the media remind us of the year’s top news stories and of the celebrities and leaders we lost. But I have a personal New Year’s Eve tradition that dates back two decades – before I had children and was still unsure whether I wanted to be a parent.
I was working with the Vital Statistics office, which maintains records of annual births, deaths, marriages and divorces. Every year we published a document with pages of statistics and one page of trivia.
The trivia page included information such as the ages of the youngest bride and the youngest groom; the ages of the oldest bride and the oldest groom; the longest marriage ending in divorce, etc. The page also contained a list of the top 20 baby names of the year: 10 for boys and the 10 for girls.
The lists fascinated me because, if you followed them year after year, they really demonstrated shifts in culture.
Which is why, every New Year’s Eve, I always spend a little time looking over the lists of popular baby names.
And every year, those lists make me smile.

365 Reasons To Smile- Day 177
I woke up in darkness to the sound of rain washing down the gutter spout outside my bedroom window, and I immediately knew what kind of day lay ahead. The kind of day when I feel absolutely no guilt about curling up with a good book while the rain pounds on the roof and creates large puddles in the street.
In other words, the kind of day that always makes me smile.
